NY chicken lover!!!!

Do you ever have trouble with the other hens kicking the broody out of the nest box? This broody is the lowest in the pecking order and my older EE who is on top kicks her out to lay.
Good point on candling, I don't think I could see through the barnie eggs, when my friend was hatching last year the green eggs were tough to see through as well.

No. I find that my broody gets up and that's when they lay eggs in her nest. 3 of them welcome the extra time out of the nest to walk about...one of them hurries back so fast I think the other hens barely have time to squat, much less lay. LOL One broody lets others lay in her nest, but she just moves over a bit to let them in. She's a little touched in the head, ya know.

What I found with my flock of broodies is if I move them to soon (before lock down) they abandon the nest. That's my birds. Every flock dynamic is different and your broody might welcome a quiet place away from the others to sit. Annie had a dog crate she put her broody in and covered it with a blanket, in the coop. Her hen liked that set up. Mine would go nuts wondering where their friends were and how come there were no new eggs in their nest.

Whatever you decide to do, do it at night. Many report moving at night cause the least amount of problems.

(My hens let me lift them up off the nest they are setting on to pick up eggs that don't belong there. I understand that that is very unusual. But my flock is very unusal. What can I say?)

congrats on the new babys ..i am wondering tho if the one is a welsummer chick ..i just got a handful of them and they look exactly like the one you have shown in your pic..i no you list them but here you take a look and tell me your opinion..

i guess chicks can look a lot alike ..even tho they are from different breeds..i just thought it was amazing how close they look to each other ..lol

sorry the pics are above and below your quote..i am not real good at the whole posting pic thing yet ..lol

Hi! WOw thanks, this is interesting. We call that one "Chipmunk" and so far Chipmunk is way smaller than the others. I just read this about Welsummers, and it says "light breed". Would this mean a smaller chick? I was worried about her. (she is my favorite so far). The ones in the playpen they came from seemed to be two shades, if I remember correctly, but I am not 100% sure. I remember seeing some lighter and darker ones wit similar makings in one of the pens. I will be very curious to see what she grows up to be. I will be happy with whatever we end up with I guess, I am really hoping one of the ones we got is actually a golden laced Wyandotte though, as I think they are very pretty birds. I was thinking Chipmunk was possibly the partridge Wyandotte. I really don't know though. Just going from memory.

I forget who on here had the pattern for these but I gave it to my Mom & she put them in my Easter basket

They are purebred Ayam Cemanis.

Beautiful swan pics. Thx for sharing. Congrats on the Ayam Cemanis pairs. Looking forward to seeing pics of them as adults.

Good morning everyone, it's been a long time since I've visited here. I'm looking for info about the upcoming chicken stock on May 17th. Can anyone tell me what thread to look up? Thanks. And I hope everyone is having fun with all their hatching!

Morning all. Another beautiful day today and I have to waste it at work. Should have been born rich instead of...me! Have to get a bigger box for the new babies or move the older ones out. Just need it to be a little warmer at night. My broody silkie hen has stolen more eggs yet again so I will leave her be. Should be hatching some out by next weekend anyways so hopefully she will give up on the new eggs when the chicks hatch. Been reading up on my reds. Bob Blosi kept a blog going while he was alive about them. He was a master breeder and the information that man passed on through his blogs is priceless. I will be doing lots of reading and rereading of them.

Rancher---you get those hatching eggs you were waiting for yet? How goes the downsizing? You are indeed correct about hatching. I have had two great hatches back to back and a complete failure prior to those two. I am hoping this last bunch I have in the bator hatch well. Its always a crap shoot, even with broodies.

I must say I do find it a little disconcerting when people weigh in on a subject on the heavy side. Each must do what works best for them, finding their way through trial and error using the information they have gleaned from others. While I may not always agree with your opinion, I will defend to the death your right to express it under the Constitution. That being said, agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Off to the pharm today for more fun, thrills and chills. Everyone have a nice day!
