NY chicken lover!!!!

That brooder set up looks great! If I get chicks this year I'll make one like it. Saw chicks at the feed store and was able to resist! Mostly Barred Rocks and only two NH, a whole bunch of meaties.

I use totes too. I cut the center of the top out and replace it with fencing. I once had the lid on solid, but the humidity build up was horrible.

Now Glass did you see my posting on the Chickenstock thread? DW has a friend at work who is retiring and I said I would try to find someone for her to buy eggs from in Lafayette.

Seven days for current hatch in incu. Not sure when Frenchies eggs are due to hatch. Have four other broodies that will be getting some of the shipped egg I got today. Some will go in the incu. Dates on these eggs are, 4/26 - 5/4 I expect the broodies will do better than I do in the incu.

I am so sad! I had looked up the regulations and thought chickens were approved, but I guess we are ONE STREET too far for the Town of Ellicott (West Ellicott) to allow chickens! So I have to cancel our chick order! My husband called the code officer today to verify and he said "no livestock" because we are the last road in the residential district. I am so disheartened!! If anyone is in the Lakewood/Jamestown area and would like some free brooder supplies, I have bought a lamp/grit, etc. So very sad. :(

I'm sorry you have to forego chickens - at this time! Why not challenge the code?? Many people on BYC have done this successfully. It would probably take some research

, some frustration

and lots of talking to the neighbors, but I'm sure you could do it!

With the cost and time involved in challenging the code, I think we'll just forego it. Sad, but we don't have the energy to change the code right now. I found someone to take the things I had purchased for the brooder. At least we hadn't bought a coop yet! Kids are so sad, but they'll get over it. I am really bummed out, though!

Oh that's too bad. I wish (strongly) that you would at least write a letter to your planning commission talking about how they are great for human health when kept in low numbers - eating bugs, ticks and mosquitoes and add any other positive things you can think of - just start the idea in their minds - don't ask for anything - just say that many towns are updating to allow 4-7 hens and it is something that should be considered in the future.

You would be doing it not just for you - but for many other people and even your children will benefit when sane people let their position be known. PLEASE ... (I am on a planning commission and let me assure you - we read and pay attention and think when things are presented in a calm manner) Good people have to stop .... stopping.

We have to speak up. I get the time to actually fight it to a point of changing it - just a letter .... pretty please ?

Have you considered applying for a Variance? I also suggest you get what you were told in writing to be sure what he says is correct. It has to be published somewhere, I would think. Check to see what you're "Zoned". There are a number of properties on the map that appear to cross over from one type of zoning into a different type of zoning. Specifically "Agricultural Residential. I don't know your address but you might find a loop hole.

Evening all. The place was in an uproar when I got home. The chicks were out of food and complaining loudly. Amazing how quiet it gets when everyone eats! Gotta get them out in the coop. Just have to figure out how to rig up something to keep the older ones away from the younger ones. My project for tomorrow.

Today was a sad day for our town. You may have seen it on the news. Sgt Shawn Farrell was killed in Afghanistan a few days ago. His body was flown in to Stewart airport and escorted all the way back here by the military, state police, Patriot riders, fire truck and many others. People lined the streets to pay their respects, flags and signs were everywhere. I knew him from substituting in the local school district and my daughters knew him from school, having graduated before and after him. A sweet boy who wanted to help everyone and only ever wanted to serve his country since he was little. Couldnt wait till he could enlist. A life cut short for a young soldier. It seems surreal when we watch these things on the news but when it hits home, it hits hard. Regardless of how you feel about war, thank a soldier for their service. It may be the last thing they ever hear. Fair winds and following seas Sgt.

I am so sorry to read of the loss you are experiencing. =(

Would you all mind posting pics of your brood box setups? I'm curious to see how everyone is doing it. I like Marquisella's idea, but would like to see some others.

Here's ours. The big downside to ours, of course, is cleaning it (can't hose down plywood), and the sheer size of it. The top door is propped open like that, to raise up the heat lamp, to lower the temp inside the box. When they're newly hatched, the door is all the way down.

Edited because I forgot to attach pictures...lol. And yes, those chickens are in my dining room right now. *sigh*.

I can only wish. I love your booder!

My husband said that we will at least apply for a variance.. so it may happen for us next year. I canceled our chick order because we won't have the approval in time, but maybe it will be in place for next year. I keep thinking that it would be fantastic for the chickens to eat up the Japanese Beetles in our yard!
