NY chicken lover!!!!

Have you considered applying for a Variance? I also suggest you get what you were told in writing to be sure what he says is correct. It has to be published somewhere, I would think. Check to see what you're "Zoned". There are a number of properties on the map that appear to cross over from one type of zoning into a different type of zoning. Specifically "Agricultural Residential. I don't know your address but you might find a loop hole.

The town of Ellicott has 2 major zones, from what the code enforcement officer said. Residential and then residential/agricultural. We are the LAST street of residential! We back up to the woods and have an acre. The neighbors across the street have 35 acres! And no chickens. It is silly. The minute you get past our street, the zoning is residential/agricultural and you can have chickens.

oh yeah! I forgot about those buggies ! Before I had chickens they decimated my raspberry bushes ... after chickens there are only a few :)

I saved a ton of money not having to buy those ugly traps that really only attract beetles to the area. Good point.

leahlefler - I'm sorry that you aren't going to be able to get your chicks.

Welcome to all the new peeps. I'm sure that you will find everyone here a wealth of knowledge!

Things here are good. I found a home for 3 of my hens. Last 2 days I only got 4 eggs. I was thinking that the ladies were taking a break till I remembered that I have 3 less. Now I have room for 1 or 2 silkies hens!!! The rest of the girls are fine. Yesterday I lost count how many times I had to shoo them back across the road, and the ducks decided that our little creek/ditch, pool, and little pond weren't enough and they decided to go across the road too. I am thankful that we live on a back country road and we don't have much traffic.

My frizzle roo is being so cute trying to get his girl to go into the duck hut. He goes in and calls her to come in. I think that he is trying to get her to lay an egg!. I keep looking, I'm sure that one of these days she is going to lay in there. I am going to put a 3rd nest box in the coop closer to the floor, maybe she will lay in there.

My FIL came and tilled up the garden. I have to get the rest of the fence and some more posts and I will be getting that planted. I think that I'm going to get it on Sunday so that I can start working on it next week. After he was done everyone was all over it picking up all the worms. It was so funny. As soon as he drove the trailer out of the driveway they all came running. Now I have 1120 sq feet of awesomeness to plant!

I am so sad! I had looked up the regulations and thought chickens were approved, but I guess we are ONE STREET too far for the Town of Ellicott (West Ellicott) to allow chickens! So I have to cancel our chick order! My husband called the code officer today to verify and he said "no livestock" because we are the last road in the residential district. I am so disheartened!! If anyone is in the Lakewood/Jamestown area and would like some free brooder supplies, I have bought a lamp/grit, etc. So very sad. :(

So Sad ! you need to move so you can have chickens .
Ive heard that chickens that have names are pets not livestock ...
You can Try to change your regulations or get a variance

I"m back...here is the pic of the tote brooder that keeps dust down.

I cut a hole in the lid, big enough for the metal holder to fit on. Then I cut a piece of hardware cloth to fit on top & use duct tape to secure it. I have to replace the tape once a year or so. Actually, this one is a little small.

Then I put the lamp with a 60 watt incandescent bulb sitting on it.
I never close the lid completely, I leave it open a couple of inches otherwise the humidity builds up too much.

The chicks stay warm, there is no detectable dust or dander, and I can keep them inside longer than I use to. I use shavings in the bottom. The shavings keep it from smelling bad, of course you have to change it occasionally.

This particular tote has a gosling & ducklings in it and is out in the barn, but its the same idea as the one I keep inside. The one I use for newly hatched chicks is not as tall, maybe 8 inches or so. That is why a 60 watt bulb works. In this one I have a 100 watt bulb because its higher up. The chicks usually stay right under the light when they are sleeping.

Because the light is outside the box, there is no danger of it falling & causing a fire.

Very Cool - mine is a cardboard box and I have the light secured to a saw horse that stands over the box. I am mostly worried that the chicks could jump/fly and hit the lamp and something could then happen. I have 21 meat chickens (red broilers) and 6 layers (1 buff orphington, 3 amaracaunas, 2 production reds). I like your set-up. The idea of no heat lamp will drive me to go by a new brooder set-up
Here are some pics:

Day 1

Today 5/8/2014 - cant belief how much they have grown - a bit camera shy my ladies =)

The two sticking they necks up by the wall in the middle of the picture are Emma (the Buff on the right) and our still nameless lady (production red) on the left

Here is Beaver

Lady Buffy

Madam Olivia

And finally the other production red named Stripy (all the way on the right.)

I <3 my chickies and I really hope that all my ladies really are ladies but cant tell yet

Would you all mind posting pics of your brood box setups? I'm curious to see how everyone is doing it. I like Marquisella's idea, but would like to see some others.

Here's ours. The big downside to ours, of course, is cleaning it (can't hose down plywood), and the sheer size of it. The top door is propped open like that, to raise up the heat lamp, to lower the temp inside the box. When they're newly hatched, the door is all the way down.
Sure.

My cat crate for first days on paper towls.

I have two of these 2ft x 4ft tubs from tsc

And then I have this one that is like 26in x 50in I think it is. both front doors can fold down there.

okay I gotta ask! Is it true that if you give pepper to chickens in the winter they'll keep laying? It was on a Pinterest board.

If it was no one would have a slow egg season in winter.....

Edited because I forgot to attach pictures...lol. And yes, those chickens are in my dining room right now. *sigh*.

We put our 3 in a bathtub and bathroom that we weren't using and hung the heat lamp over the side. Fredo started to fly in a few weeks so we closed the bathroom door so he wouldn't get hurt, and eventually moved him to the kitchen into a large dog crate with the heat lamp attached to the outside. Now we only use the heat lamp for bath time, so they dry nicely, after having their feathers blow dried.

Leah, many city people keep the chickens inside. Not sure if this would work for you. We just built a tractor supply coop in our back hall. Fits great and the chickens now have more room. I hope you can work something out with your town, or keep the chickens "private". We have a neighboring town that we pay taxes to (odd scenario, we pay in 2 towns 1 allows chickens and 1 doesn't, we are allowed) and they have a rule of no chickens unless you have 10 acres. I called them and the lady there tells me that chickens carry disease and are loud. I asked her if she has any idea of how loud the neighbors dogs bark, not to mention the large buffalo duties they leave on the lawn. I informed her that chickens wear diapers, take baths, and live in a cage and so can't irritate neighbors. She said, "Oh." I think that a lot of these variances are made from ignorant people. Let's see, I can have 10 great danes and not 1 chicken? Sadly, there are chicken haters out there. Best of luck! I hope it works out good for you!

Oh that's too bad. I wish (strongly) that you would at least write a letter to your planning commission talking about how they are great for human health when kept in low numbers - eating bugs, ticks and mosquitoes and add any other positive things you can think of - just start the idea in their minds - don't ask for anything - just say that many towns are updating to allow 4-7 hens and it is something that should be considered in the future.

You would be doing it not just for you - but for many other people and even your children will benefit when sane people let their position be known. PLEASE ... (I am on a planning commission and let me assure you - we read and pay attention and think when things are presented in a calm manner) Good people have to stop .... stopping.

We have to speak up. I get the time to actually fight it to a point of changing it - just a letter .... pretty please ?

Speaking of great for human health - there are nursing homes in England that are using 'chicken therapy' for the residents. They have small areas set aside for a limited flock and the residents care for the birds. It has been found to be very therapeutic! Chickens rock
