NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all. What a storm last night. Woke me up it was so loud. Today six brats go to their new home. Their new owner is so excited he has been working like a fiend to get everything done on the coop and run. His wife was telling me all about it yesterday. I had to chuckle. He has been so antzy to get his chickens. The other 6 will be delivered in a week or so. Brats arent happy they are still in the coop but I have to go sort out the ones goint today and am not fishing them out of the run! Chickenstock is next weekend! I have 11 cheeps who will be coming with me. Unless someone wants some mutt chicks. I have room for more in my car!

Gotta go band some chicks and put a divider in the coop so the older ones dont kill the younger ones. Have a good day all.

With the cost and time involved in challenging the code, I think we'll just forego it. Sad, but we don't have the energy to change the code right now. I found someone to take the things I had purchased for the brooder. At least we hadn't bought a coop yet! Kids are so sad, but they'll get over it. I am really bummed out, though!
aww i am sorry to hear your news ..i no its hard and if kids are looking forward to them, it might be even tougher..you guys are welcome to come visit my flock anytime ..i no kids like to see them and i almost always have eggs if you all would like some ..i no lakewood says i can have pet birds as long as i am not selling the eggs and making a business out of it ..i think ellicots crazy ..you guys are out in the country more then i am ..i no some have challanged the laws in their towns and have won and codes were change..

Would you all mind posting pics of your brood box setups? I'm curious to see how everyone is doing it. I like Marquisella's idea, but would like to see some others. Here's ours. The big downside to ours, of course, is cleaning it (can't hose down plywood), and the sheer size of it. The top door is propped open like that, to raise up the heat lamp, to lower the temp inside the box. When they're newly hatched, the door is all the way down. Edited because I forgot to attach pictures...lol. And yes, those chickens are in my dining room right now. *sigh*.
Very cool, I use a tote for the first few days to a week then I have a insulated shed area for them :)
Sure. My cat crate for first days on paper towls. I have two of these 2ft x 4ft tubs from tsc And then I have this one that is like 26in x 50in I think it is. both front doors can fold down there. If it was no one would have a slow egg season in winter.....
Very cool set ups! I have a dog crate with a broken top I might make into one of those with a welded wire top :)
okay I gotta ask! Is it true that if you give pepper to chickens in the winter they'll keep laying? It was on a Pinterest board.
I have heard that too, not sure if there is any truth to it

This is my chick condo. Where they go when they leave the house. The pic was taken before it was finished, but you can see it has 3 shelves, the lamps hang fromm the bottom of the shelf above them. We wrapped it in hardward cloth. I originally has plastic type net, but they predators ate through it. Then my husband mad the 3 door, thing that actually hangs from the top shelp & is secured at the bottom. The shelves are metal. I now have 2 lamps hanging side by side for a larger are of warmth, as this is outside in the barn, undeated. I keep it wraped in a canvas tarp, hanging from the top with those big plastic clips you can buy at Harbor Freight. The tarp comes together in front of the doors so I can open it to feed & water, ect. Now, as it gets warmer I pull the tarp back on one side, and then when its summer, I leave the tarp open like in the picture.

Downside, its too far for me to reach in to the sides if I'm trying to catch the chicks to move them out. So, if I was to do this again, I'd get a shelf that was only 4 feet wide for ease of catching the chicks, otherwise, it works well. I've had it going for about 8 years now. We picked up the shelf on the side of the road for free. When I clean it out, I use a hand garden hoe & pull the shavings out the door, either I catch it in a wheel barrel, of just let it drop on the floor & then shovel it into the wheel barrel. You can see the hoe, its on the bottom shelf inside the open door area.

I confess, that I rarely use the bottom shelf, because its harder for me to bend down to do things to it, and even harder for me to get up again!

The town of Ellicott has 2 major zones, from what the code enforcement officer said. Residential and then residential/agricultural. We are the LAST street of residential! We back up to the woods and have an acre. The neighbors across the street have 35 acres! And no chickens. It is silly. The minute you get past our street, the zoning is residential/agricultural and you can have chickens.

Well from what I can see some "lots" Parcels cross from on zone to the next. Seems to me if I had a parcel that crossed into the Agr/res. zone, I'd just stick my coop over the line to where it is okay to have chickens.

Now if the chickens can't read and they crossed the line what could I do about it?
