NY chicken lover!!!!

Pyxis - I sent you an email about a possible job ....

Rancher - I hear you ... people list something a year old at the price or just a little under a new one ???? Even for a small savings I'm not going to bite because a new one comes with some sort of warranty or return period .. Also for me color of things are huge .... so I'm not going to pay near full price for something which is not in my preferred colors ... I don't mind people selling things - but sheesh - figure out why and who you are selling to ....

Hope everyone had a nice Mother's Day!!!

We don't generally make a big deal out of these holidays, so today was like any other day. Horseback lesson for my daughter...hubby spent the day working on the power steering pump on his diesel pickup...grocery shopping, etc. Same ol stuff, different day!

We had little ameraucana chick Buffy, Emma the buff orphington and the named today by my daughters cousin production red "Amber" on the grass for the first time. Emma and Buffy seemed to always come straight toward me as though they felt comfortable/safe with me =). The girlies did great on their little adventure. I can't wait to have them out again.

I added some chicken wire cover to the brooder and the light no sits on top. I feel a lot better about this as it cannot catch on fire I don't think and the chickies can't get out. =0

Lady Buffy looks a bit lit a stacker peeking out behind the small waterer. Which by the way I am giving up on. It is full of shavings 5 minutes after I clean it every time.

Wow, could we moms ask for a more beautiful day on this fine Mother's Day?!? It is gorgeous out there!
I thought I would spend the day taking care of my other "children" since my 2 humans are afraid of any bug that flies by their way outside. Fine with me! Nothing but peace and quiet and chicken noises outside while I work on getting everyones living quarters cleaned out. I had to rip up the linoleum flooring of the big coop cuz it tore in a couple of spots over winter and I was shoveling shavings out of it. It was a pain cuz I could no longer take my dustpan and shovel everything out and shavings were now going under the flooring, it was a drag. I didn't feel like taking a ride out to lowes today so I used half of a tarp and stapled that down for the flooring instead. I think Nervous Nancy was getting annoyed with me cuz she wanted to get in there and lay an egg...

All cleaned out and now both want to get in to lay...in the same nest box of course!

My daughter told me today that she would like to name the blue hen "Ella" because it rhymes with Stella. So I guess her permanent name is Ella. I'll still call her Nervous Nancy when she's acting all frantic.

How old is your coop? it looks immaculate!!! Nice birdies too.

Raise the waterer up on a block of wood. Add height as they grow so they can't kick the shaving into it. I use leftover scraps of 2x4 from building stuff. Wash it with soap and water and let it dry good and you are all set for the next time.

We're having the same problem with our waterer. Last year, I did raise it up with a wooden platform, but this year, the smallest chick (silkie) is a LOT smaller than the biggest chick and the minimum I would need to raise the waterer would be too tall for the silkie.

I saw on here once...I can't remember where though...somebody had built a brood box that was set up in such a way that the waterer and feed trough were not on the shavings. They were on chicken wire, I think, or something like that...so the chicks could eat and spill food to their little hearts content and it would just fall underneath the wire...and no shavings could be kicked in.

I wish I could find that setup again. Because when I design my next brood box, it will totally be set up that way.

Was cool and very windy here this morning, but this afternoon was beautiful! One of the girls was so happy that the lawn was mowed, she laid an egg.
