Love this ones hairdo! I bet even my (non-chicken liking husband) would like this one.

They're always that nice looking! Lol I don't know how they stay so clean. Well pharm had bathed hers the night before the picnic but that's about it.

I'm up to three hatched chicks under my broody!

Here is another newbie question...sorry.
I am interested in fermenting food (I know there is a thread =) ) and I am getting to the bottom of my stater feed bag. So....I am wondering if
1. my chicks are old enough to move away from the starter
2. what type/brand would you recommend since I have 21 meat birds and 6 layers all about the same age 2.5-3.5 weeks old.

I was thinking to go with a commercial finisher product.

Any thoughts welcome.

Lynzi--so glad you are happy with your new hen. She is sweet and will get along well with the girls. Chris told me that Junior thought he was going to walk in lay down the rules to Hilda. Guess he got a butt whooping from her. Hahahaha! Boys always think they rule the roost but never mess with a broody momma!

II planted my wild plum tree and fenced it off good so hopefully it will grow well and strong. Hopefully the fencing holds up to the chickens and deer as well! I took down the barrier today and some of the little monsters went into the run with the brats. Needless to say, its the boys that are causing the uproar. The monsters start their crap between each other so then the brat boys have to go over and start pecking on them and the screaming begins. I broke it up a few times but now I think I will just let them be to sort it out. I dont see any killing moves being made, just annoyed pecks by the bigger chicks (brats). They are 28 days older and double the size of the monsters but have been living together for almost two weeks in the coop with a fence between them. Its time to integrate. The girls dont seem to be missing Bill and my yard is quiet! Only got 7 eggs today though and thats not good. We will see what tomorrow brings. Got at least two coops cleaned out so thats good.

Time to go putter some more. Glad you all like the pics. Later!

I too have got TSc chicks 5 ...I added them to our hatched chick a month ago ..No problems ...no sickness..in the birds .
My adults havent been sick either they share the same common screened wall .I added Tabs 2 chicks to them last night .
I imagine not all the chicks that come from MT Healthy have salmonella ..only some of them .

We got our coop! We bought an "used" coop that was built last year from a family that is "done" with chickens. We have to do a lot of modifications - the windows have screening on them, but we're going to replace that with hardware cloth. We will also build a run and change the chicken door to a pull-up/down style (right now it opens like a traditional door). I need to clean the coop as well, to make sure there are no bugs or germs from previous chickens.

How do you "clean" a coop (disinfect it)? It is wood on the inside.. should I hose it out and use a mild bleach solution to wipe everything down with?

Anyway - pictures of the new coop!

That coop is adorable leahlefler! You got quite a deal! My advice would be to use a apple cider vinegar and water solution to scrub all the sufaces, bleach is a little harsh. It will stink for a few days for sure, but it goes away. After its all dry it wouldn't hurt to get some de and dust everything. Good luck!

Leah---nice coop!

Looks hardly used! Vinegar and water work good to clean it all up. Disinfects as well. Throw some de around on the floors and walls and roosts and nesting boxes and you will be all good. Of course you are going to want more...
