Great day at the picnic yesterday. Got my free LG incubator from Marq. Hubby is going to try installing a fan in it, he already talked to Travis on how.
I see all this chatter on FB about the Salmonella outbreak at Mt Healthy, and they are the ones that supply most all TSC, my local one included. What is everyone's thoughts on this? I got 12 chicks from them in March and really don't want to kill my babies. We sell eggs. Always wash our hands after handling birds or collecting eggs, although little girl usually ends up with fingers in her mouth before that ( trying to break that habit still). It seems the 2 options are to quarantine my flock forever and assume they are all infected or cull the chicks.
I had to write a paper on salmonella for school last year & even grew some in the lab. It's a bacteria commonly found in the GI tract. A bird has to be really sick for the bacteria to move into her reproductive/egg laying area. Usually only happens in high stress production facilities. There is a culture & quick test that your vet should have access to if you want to find out if ur birds have it. U might be able to just bring a bag of chicken poop to the vet. Still hand washing & thoroughly cooking are always good ideas. Be well.
