NY chicken lover!!!!

Great day at the picnic yesterday. Got my free LG incubator from Marq. Hubby is going to try installing a fan in it, he already talked to Travis on how.
I see all this chatter on FB about the Salmonella outbreak at Mt Healthy, and they are the ones that supply most all TSC, my local one included. What is everyone's thoughts on this? I got 12 chicks from them in March and really don't want to kill my babies. We sell eggs. Always wash our hands after handling birds or collecting eggs, although little girl usually ends up with fingers in her mouth before that ( trying to break that habit still). It seems the 2 options are to quarantine my flock forever and assume they are all infected or cull the chicks.

I had to write a paper on salmonella for school last year & even grew some in the lab. It's a bacteria commonly found in the GI tract. A bird has to be really sick for the bacteria to move into her reproductive/egg laying area. Usually only happens in high stress production facilities. There is a culture & quick test that your vet should have access to if you want to find out if ur birds have it. U might be able to just bring a bag of chicken poop to the vet. Still hand washing & thoroughly cooking are always good ideas. Be well.

The salmonella paper had to be presented to the class in PowerPoint present. I spun the presentation to promote local eggs because we are less likely to get salmonella from backyard chicken eggs than we are to get it from Walmart eggs. My nursing instructors were not impressed. Oh well, I tried.:)

Ok
KCs were the friendliest of all my ducks but I was feeding them out of a bucket from hand everyday and the followed me around everywhere. They are now with Marq so I can have/hatch pure runner eggs. The runners may end up being a mix but there's really no telling until they hatch and you let them grow out a little. My black runner got hit by a car a few weeks ago so there's no telling who their eggs are fertilized by now.
cool I'll have to post pictures of the baby's :). Sorry about your black runner :(

I think it was Meyer or mcmurray. Definitely not mt healthy. When I get back home I can look around for the chick box they gave me (they didn't have any other boxes for me).

Your reply alone made me feel so much better =). I will try and call them just to be certain. My DD does everything with me including taking care of the chickens and we wash our hands immediately after we are done with them. I now also keep babywipes next to them (an idea from reading someones post on here) so that we can wipe our hands before touching anything else like the doorknob.

I have no doubt that one of those Blue containers being sold on CL could be converted into a tumbler/composter with ease.

My husband is quite handy and I will have to check our local Craigslist to see if there are any barrels there!

We just got our coop today - I am SO SO SO excited! I have to thoroughly clean it and we have to make some adjustments. The coop windows only have regular window screen on them - we'll be replacing that with hardware cloth! We will also have to build a run.

Can Salmonella be killed by antibiotics? Isn't that how they cure it in humans? It was my understanding that Salmonella can be transmitted through the egg shell, so are born with it in their system....so I don't know what to tell you about your chicks, except buy your child some kid size garden gloves for when she is around the birds and grab them off her hands before they hit her mouth.

Thanks for the salmonella input to all. I cried a bit at the prospect of killing 7 pullets and 5 bantam roolets. They all appear healthy, but with selling our eggs I worry about someone else getting sick.
Now after hubby and little girl wake from nap time, we are going to strip the fan out of our old college computer to install in the LG. will need to pick up some hygrometers and thermometers for it. Hubby wants to hatch eggs from Tab's barred frizzle OE and the EE. Should be interesting mixed with GLW or white EE or Partrige Rock Roos.

Ok, I feel a bit better, lol.  Because the prospect of culling 23 chicks and having to start over this spring was not too appealing.

I know that you're not supposed to lick the bowl, eat cookie dough, etc etc., because there's *always* a risk.  But as the risk was relatively low, I never worried about it, and we've never gotten sick.

Like I said I have done it for over 40 years and have never gotten sick actually that is the best part of brownies the batter yummmmm!

I would have loved it phooey on them!
