It looks infected to me ...I would separate her ..and lance it with a sterile needle or lancet to see if there is puss in it.
It should stop the swelling. put some anti -bacterial ointment on it
I don't *think* she was bit or stung...they hadn't been outside for some time, up until today, and the swelling started yesterday.

I'll have to have my sweetie lance it when he gets home. It doesn't seem bulbous or anything though...it feels fleshy.

And it seems like the top of her head is swelling a bit too.

I try to put them away when the are dry ..but sometimes they are there till morning.
2 reasons I put them up there
1) they are out of the way of the 2 men that live here ..
2) they dry quicker up there ..if the shells are dry wouldnt the bacteria die if there was some there ?
Do you sell unwashed eggs ?
I think most people wouldnt want to buy eggs with poop on them ..im sure some people dont mind .
I suppose I could wash them in a vinegar rinse that would take care of the bacteria

I tell my two main customers that I don't wash the eggs and why and they they last longer when not washed - they accept my reasoning since I am the raising the chickens or they pass ... obviously they love my eggs and 2 customers is all I need.....

I educated them, and they are fine with poop smear or whatever. Now - sometimes you know an egg comes smushed in poopy goo - those eggs I also set aside and feed back to the chickens in an omlet. (cooking any possible bacteria).

I don't wash them, but I do clean them up a bit, slightly damp paper towel if they are "muddy". I have explained to people, and one googled it to check. They love them. My two best customers are on long trips, however. I sure do miss them.

Wow, I'm kind of surprised that no one really washes their eggs. I let mine soak then scrub them. I may have to rethink my ways, though no one has ever gotten sick in my house or my Mil's. We don't get enough to sell(yet)

I don't know if anybody saw this, but does anybody have any idea what's going on with this chick's comb? This was the picture from yesterday...today its even more swollen and looks like it may even be bleeding a little.

I don't have any idea what's wrong but did you say that the top of her head is also swollen?
