NY chicken lover!!!!

Hey, just getting started with chickens, only 1 hen right now (a mutt i don't know what she is...) and I am wondering if there is anyone here in NY fairly close to the binghamton area who would have bantam cochin hen's for sale. I am looking for just 1 right now, preferably 3-6 weeks old.

Please PM me if you have one or know someone who does.

I had someone back out of a chick sale... Looks like I'll only be hatching with a deposit from now on! If anyone is looking for blue, black, or splash orps (I'm in delanson) pm me!

The birds I got from marquisella are doing well and have sharing free range time with the main flock for the last couple of days. Tonight, I closed the door between runs and they went in the big coop on their own. (Given the choice they went in their old baby coop.). They are no longer making chick noises, they are clucking and they have deep voices. They are very shy of me, even after a few weeks of trying to slowly give treats from my hand. They stick so close together, they look like a three-headed chicken! I'm sure they'll warm up a bit when they get closer to laying. And maybe when they see the big chickens running TOWARD me when I am carrying the big yellow scoop of scratch. Now to clean out the baby coop and run for the chicks that hatched on Mother's Day to move them out of my house...

The only thing I've done with the garden is transplant some strawberry runners and pot a few fruit trees for planting in a week or so when we get around to it. Haven't started any seeds or bought any seedlings yet! I seem to be doing everything late this year.

That so $ucks. I hate when that happens so much I no longer hatch chicks for anyone....IF I have extra I'll sell some, but nope, too many flaky people out there to invest my time and money into a "possible sale". $$$ up front...forget "a deposit"....get the whole amount up front and refund anything that doesn't hatch. Non-refundable deposit of the entire amount. LOL

x2 I both tell and give it to my customers in writing what I do with my eggs. I have more customers than I have eggs during the summer. (during the winter I would still have more customers than eggs, but both are reduced in quantity due to my driveway being a nightmere and my hens being to stubborn to lay in the bitter cold. LOL) Here is what I give my customers: " Eggs are clean, but not washed. For Maximum safety wash under warm water before cracking OR be sure to cook well before eating. Eggs are collected twice a day so there is no possiblity of finding a growing chick inside of one. They are NOT candled so there is a possiblity of finding blood or "meat" spots in them. If this possiblity bothers you crack them in a separate bowl before adding them to your recipe and scoop out anything undesireable. (I find blood spots in 1 out of ever 15-18 eggs I crack) Please let me know if you feel you have to throw away an egg due to contents. I will gladly replace the egg with your next purchase. Eggs are very fresh. (sometimes laid the same day you buy them) If you want to hard boil them and peel them, add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to water. Please return your egg cartons. All cartons are reused and printing on them does not reflect the current contents. 2 large Store bought eggs = 1/3 cup of egg."

Yeah, a little...but I think its more just swollen where the comb connects, and isn't actually the head itself.

Poor chick, hope it's nothing and just goes away. Glad to hear she's still eating, drinking, etc. Would a dab of blue-kote help after lancing it? Maybe? Anyone w blue-kote experience?

I should probably add that I add to or change the bedding in the favorite 2 nest boxes daily, so my eggs rarely have much on them to be removed....once in a while someone will poop on an egg and I scrape that off. But, since I collect both morning and night they are pretty clean. Ones with a lot of soil on them (you know the ones, the ones someone laid ON THE FLOOR) I will wash off and put in a carton for my own consumption or leave them on the counter to scramble and feed back to the chickens. (I don't risk giving germs to a customer due to my beleifs on how eggs should be handled)

When Columbus sailed from Spain to the Orient (he got a little lost it seems) he took eggs with him and ate them for the whole time he was at sea. They were still good due to the bloom they have when laid. So while washing removes germs from the outside of the shell, it also removed the bloom that keeps the germs from entering the egg through the pores in the shell.
