NY chicken lover!!!!

Speaking of broodys, I thought a while ago my blue Orp hen wanted to go broody only to find her out of the nestbox a couple hours later after laying her egg. Thought the same thing this morning when I reached in for eggs. They were both in there, Stella got up and left the coop, Ella stayed in and hasn't laid an egg yet. Went back up there a couple of hours later, she laid the egg, I took it, she stayed on the nest. She didn't come out until a few minutes ago. I don't get it. I'm setting eggs aside in case she changed her mind.
One of my EE hens did this to me for a stretch of 2-3 weeks. She'd actually sit for a good length of the day, growl, squawk and fluff up every time I came near her, etc. But she'd never stay for more than a few hours.

My BR hen does it too, from time to time...but her attention span is even shorter.

Out of 23 eggs 7 are developing.

Guess I should be happy with what I've got. That's the last time I spend $$$ on hatching eggs. This happened the last time I got eggs shipped to me, half never reattached their air cells and those never developed. I really hope these 7 hatch so I can at least say I got my moneys worth.

Best of luck with your eggs. What kind of eggs are they and did you let them set around 24 hours before starting incubation. The first time I purchased a dpzen hatching eggs and had them shipped I had 1 of 24 hatch and only 3 even developed because the air cells never attached. The time after I purchased my next batch of eggs I had 16 of 24 hatch ffrom the same place and some were over a week old and shipped from CA. I let them sit for 24 hours in an egg carton. I have also put them in the egg turner and let them run in that 24 hours before starting incubation and that worked just as well. I learned this from another BYC member that letting the eggs sit 24 hours before incubating that it increases the chance of the air cells attaching. Hope if you try sometime it works as well for you as me.

I got sizzle eggs shipped from CA. The first time I ordered hatching eggs I did let them set for 24hrs. This time I completely forgot but when I emailed another sizzle breeder she said she never let's them sit because she just can't wait lol said she never had an issue with the eggs hatching. So bad mistake on my end I guess. I can just hope for the best with these 7.

Don't feel to bad. I paid $55 for 14 eggs and got two chicks. At least I think both are from the paid for eggs. I also hope one is a rooster. Strangely enough I'm happy I got those. Iv'e got paid for eggs under four broody hens and I hope for at least two of those to hatch too.

I just traded away a frizzle pullet. I've got another here. Not sure which egg is hers but you might want to make a connection. She was in with the EE's, but is not back with the Dels. Not sure how she got back in.

I've got a place to separate her and her mother out. Mother is Buckwheat a barred frizzle who may or may not be laying. She is a Del patterned. Am I offering? $0.00 unless you want to give me a couple bucks. Sure if you want. I'll pm you if I get some eggs.

I did "ok" with my shipped eggs, but not as great as I would have liked. I let them sit for 24 hours and then, when incubating, I cooked them "upright" and turned them only slightly for the first week or so. So with the Brinsea, I didn't roll the incubator completely from one side to the other, I propped it so it only rolled halfway.

Ironically, my most damaged egg hatched just fine! This egg had a dent in the fat end, which I repaired with super glue and then Elmer's Glue on top of that. And when candling, the air cell was so badly saddled, the chick appeared to actually be in the air cell halfway through incubation. But I got a little Speckled Sussex out of that egg! So glad I let it incubate.

Congrats. He looks rather grey so I'm assuming he is still shedding his winter coat?
I'm guessing. This is the first fox I've seen close up. I always thought they were bigger.

On the subject of hatching shipped eggs, I put 13 in lockdown today. I started with 18 only one wasn't fertile the rest were early quitters. I'm hoping at least half hatch. I let them sit for 3 days before putting them in the incubator. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks Rancher, I appreciate the offer but right now I'm working with the Silkies and sizzles. I actually found out that if I breed a sizzle (smooth) to a frizzle the. I'm kind of working backwards if that makes sense. Since you get the sizzles by breeding a frizzle to a Silkie. I have a pair of sizzle that I can breed to each other but that's it. So by ordering these eggs I was hoping to get more. I think I got stuck with all cockerels but I've been in touch with Sheri Minkner and she said my sizzle "cockerel" might actually be the pullet and the smooth that was sent to me as a pullet is actually the cockerel. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that's the case. I haven't heard any crowing out of the sizzle like I have the smooth so here's hoping!!!
