NY chicken lover!!!!

I think everyone enjoyed their first night's stay in the big coop! Only thing I have left to do today is make some sort of tray to hang under that roost because obviously the polish are going to want to roost and the silkies aren't. I just think it's going to be tough to make something wide enough to catch everything but not too wide to where they can't get up there.
Oh my goodness.. Im falling i love with the silikies!! The more pics i see the more I want.. Pretty birds..:)

Low Light and No Eggs: I actually just got done hooking up the camera in the silkies coop and decided to turn the light back on in there because it IS so dark under that tree with no sun the coop is even darker. Not that they are in there all day but still. I'm wondering if turning that light on will give my last silkie I'm waiting on a little boost to start laying. I put the camera on in there with hopes to figure out who that mystery egg layer was yesterday.

I did notice her eating a bit and she did leave a pile of poop, so I have hope. I pray for everything. Even my chickens. I know His eye is on the Sparrow, so I think His eye is on my chickens too.

I've learned not to question Him. He knows best.

Curious for winter time, what kind of light?
Any lightbulb?

Quote: I always have crows...they hang around for spilt grain, etc. I actually like to have them around, its just weird.

What I do have a lot of this year is barn swallows...I think all the past few years babies have returned. They even are nesting in my bluebird houses...Lots of swooping down around my head..so pretty and they eat mosquitos...yeah!

Well to be honest I probably should have something more safe but I have it wrapped it around a post in there pretty good, it's not going anywhere. But I used a cord from my son's robot night light he was no longer using and the only bulb that could fit the socket, a 40watt decorative bulb like these:

I really should buy a desk lamp that I could clamp onto that post up there but this bulb doesn't get that hot and like I said I have secured it pretty well. And it's up high where the birds can't reach it. It worked great over the winter with the Orps.

Rancher, I hope that Buckweat will be okay!

Talk about mud. I could use a week of dry weather. My run is more of a mud slick then an chicken run. I have to be extra careful when I'm out there. I have to wear my mud boots and go slow, but when I wear my mud boots Captain my roo tries to attack me. I'm going to cull him soon.

Worked on the duck pond yesterday. Dug out a lot more. The ducks were in it a lot today. It filled in last night after we got yet another rain storm. Just trying to work out the details with DH as how to fix it better. We are trying to figure out how we want to finish it. I keep changing my mind what I want to do with it. Not sure if it is going to stay there or put one somewhere else. I hate that the last few years I keep second guessing myself and can't decide what I'm going to do with anything.

Last night I caught the feral cat in my trap. He was relocated to a friends farm on the other side of town. I think that he was from 2 neighbors ago and when they left they left him. They were a bunch of jerks. I was glad when they left. I wish that I had a room that I could work on trying to rehabilitating him. I saw potential just before he ran to the barn. They had just lost their barn cat so they were happy to take him. It still made me cry a little when he ran off. I guess I'm just a softy, I just didn't want him to get hungry and try to eat one of my chicks.

My frizzle hen decided that she is done with being a broody for now. I have just been collecting eggs but haven't put any under her. She's been sitting on a golf ball and seemed content. Rosita is still sitting. Her eggs are due to hatch it a few days. I'll water check them tomorrow. Little Peepers is such a good little mommy. It is so cute watching her and her babies.

Thank you!

I read up on ponds, and if you are going to let the ducks in you should put stones around the banks, cause they will erode the banks down and eventually it will be a mud hole. Ponds should have steep sides to prevent weeds from growing and at least 2 feet deep. Have a ramp for the ducks to go in & out. Otherwise it will evolve into a cat tail, weed pond. That is what is preventing me from diggin a pond here. Maintenance is important, and if its just a hole with water, you will regret it.
