NY chicken lover!!!!

We are rebuilding one of those vinyl type sheds that blew down last year. I need to get the covering, but to buy one that goes on it costs more than the original one did with all the poles! So, what type of plastic does everyone use for their hoop houses & how do you attach it to the frame? I'm worried that because we aren't using hog panels, that the plastic will sag between the roof poles and hole water/stretch it out...any ideas? Using cattle panels would defeat the purpose of reusing the frame from the old shed....

I'm looking for transportation for 2 goslings from South of Maine to Central, NY.

If anyone is travelling this summer or knows of anyone, give me a holler....Thanks.

I'm not on for long these days.  I was going to tell you to swing by and get a couple of hens or some chicks. But we have to schedule around DW's appointments.

I'm not following many threads these days just the NY ones.  Aren't you lucky?

I've been spending to much time on BYC and I suspect certain other folks are upset with me, so I'm considering stopping all together.  It's no longer fun.
Sent you a PM!

hey NY chickenlovers!

We've been having a lot of fun with our new birds. A few of the babies got sick and died after the swap :( but the rest seemed to make it out okay. At least we are learning a lot. Mr Baunlee and I got engaged last weekend so there are lots of exciting changes around here. I have trained my dogs to be well around the birds and my youngest dog is especially fond of them. When her mother gets too close to the cage she kind of play bites at her mothers mouth letting her know to get away from her babies. When they were really small she would just hold them under her legs and every now and then you'd hear a peep and she would lift up her leg and you see a chickie in there. I do not leave them unsupervised, although, they would probably be fine if I did.

I planted a garden around their coop of veggies I don't have any intentions for. The veggies along the fence include cukes, cabbages, tomatoes etc. I got a great book at the library about planting for free range chickens. It was written by Jessi Bloom and called "Free Range Chicken Gardens: How to Create a Beautiful , Chicken Friendly Yard". Their coop is under a set of cherry trees and I made them a dust bath area there. I set down some wood logs around plants like rosemary and yarrow to keep the grass from growing up around the plant. I have other logs on the side of the run for bugs. The rest of the run area I have allowed the grass to start growing tall and have kept the mower out of that area. I have planted herbs such as lavender and mint (ty grammachick) around the coop. The smaller plants inside the coop run area will get protected once the chicks live there. I have sunflowers all over the place and a few inside the run which I protected from weeds with sheets of bark. The coop itself was made for almost nothing out of recycled materials. The fencing was also donated (thanks dad!)

Pyxis: that sounds horrible. I saw something online which is a red light and supposedly keeps predators away. Its called night guard (not sure if it works as I've never used it, only come across mentions of it when researching coop security)

Well, there's another cemani rooster in the mail coming to me from a different line than mine are. Fingers crossed he makes it okay. Stupid raven was out there today yelling his head off. Probably mad that the coop is locked up tight. No eggs for him. I'm leaning towards poisoning him because he flies away every time I open the door. A dead bird laced with something left out as a snack. Yummy. At least he didn't get my silkies; they were the only babies not in that coop because they were too large to mix with the newly hatched ones safely. I've decided to give up on marans for now. My new flock of them was part of what the raven ate. So I'll keep the gorgeous rooster from Marq for making olive eggers but otherwise I'm picking a new breed as I seem to have horrible luck with the marans. Just have to decide what I want! I've been toying with the idea of recreating the ancobar so maybe that's what I'll do.
