Pyxis - what is the problem you have with Marans. While SAH lost a hen from me I've never lost any. In her case I figure it's just the stress of an old girl moving. Though I'm not sure what her age was. I like mine as they are great winter layers. Not easy to hatch but good once I get them going. I will say there is way to much copper in the one young roo I did keep. Not at all like his father nor the mean one SAH took.

SAH , is the hen laying for you? I actually think they do better in the cold/cool weather.

Yes she has laid me two eggs so far! I dropped one and gave the other to the broody Comet today along with some RIR eggs.

No troubles with the actual birds, just rotten luck. First, with my foundation group, a dog came and killed my cockerel, so no rooster for the flock. Then, I borrowed Metella's rooster that I had hatched for her so I could hatch some eggs and get my own rooster. Somehow that flock came down with mycoplasma, still no idea where it came from, and I had to cull before it spread. Now, I hatch more to try again, since I got that beautiful rooster from Marq, and a raven eats them.

I am so excited! I was locking up the silkie coop and heard a cheep. I picked up the broody hen and there was a perfect little phoenix chick under her! This is my first ever broody so I am very happy! I hope a couple more hatch for her too!

I am in the same boat Pyxis. I've decided that I want to try to focus on one breed of chickens to have a small breeding project. I may be selling most of what I have not that there are that many. I'm having a hard time trying to decide what breed that I want to go with...

I like my Marans and I may stay with the blue color. I already have 2 nice girls. But I'm interested in Delawares also, but then again I do like the cochins both bantam and LF...And then there are my frizzles and silkies that I love. I know that the Orps are popular, but I like the idea of having something that is a little less popular. I know that if I don't like what ever I decided that I can change my mind, and I plan on trying several different types in the future, but I can't decide what to start with...

I would like to go with something that isn't too rare or to expensive? Something that is good for our climate and one that is on the docile side...I know that everyone has their favorites, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Little BR chicky is having some trouble. Had pasty butt that I washed off last night. Tonight it's poor little vent is swollen terrible and can't poop. It cries every time it tries. I rinsed off what little crusty stuff there was then ran it under cold water for a minute, then applied some A&D ointment. Everyone else seems to be ok, now that I got the brooder temp down. And it looks worse on this chick since it has no tail. Wish I still had those witch hazel pads from the hospital after having little girl 4 years ago, that is the only thing I can think of possibly helping.

Morning all. Listened to the coyotes whooping it up at 4 am. They were running the ridge just beyond the swamp. Hadnt heard them in a while. Dh was listening to the deer munching on our lawn at the same time. My cat insisted on getting me up early this morning so the cheeps got out early this morning. It is delightfully cool out. Everyone had a nice long afternoon of freeranging yesterday. I put the silkie chicks out in their little run (thanks lynzi for the recommendation) and they had a blast. I was sitting with them and heard a funny cheep from them. Looked down to see they were looking at a worm. After a few minutes of suspicious chirps, one grabbed it and ran, chirping like crazy. It was too funny seeing this little chick with a worm hanging from its beak and the rest of it wrapped around its beak and it was chirping and running. Finally it ran into the carrier and dropped it on the floor and pecked it apart to eat it. Their first worm. A couple of the terrorists were eating the catepillars off the oak tree. I think they are tent catepillars. It was also weird to hear their beaks snapping shut as they were eating the bugs flying around too. Even the chicks were catching and eating them in the air.

Going to see about picking strawberries this morning while its still cool. Finishing the collar on this sweater as well so I can start putting it together. I have more projects I want to do. Looking for a good crochet pattern to make chickens. Anyone have one to make chicken saddles? Thought that would be neat to make.

Enjoy the day everyone.
