NY chicken lover!!!!

howdy all.

Sorry about your girl gramma chick. I hope you got lots of chicks from her that are good for you.

luvmychicks I find the ones who are on back tend to be ones I have to put down or I try to help and end up dieing. I hope it lives for ya. I always hate putting down a chick. It seems the ones on back or huge stomach tend to be bad off.

Well I guess I have a bad case of coccidiosis around here. I was wondering why my silkies was dying and thought roo was pecking heads. Well I moved chicks to the hoop coop where silkies use to be and they started dying within 8 days. I put them on the medicated feed and they stopped dying. Since I don't like to sell stuff I know are sick or has been sick I gave them to a guy at work who will give to his brother.

Well my kids are showing their buff bearded silkies this week at the local fair. I have to say I don't like how the chicken house is laid out. I noticed it last year and this year has the same trend. Meat birds are the showcase. And man are they ugly here is a layout I did with paint real fast.

1,2 are random breeds top end by number 8 of 2 is little kids like mine. 3 is meat birds. the green is main walk way through barn. 4 is bantams. 5 is 3 gooses. 6 is like 3 turkies. 7's are rabbits and 8 is a peacock.

don't get me wrong I know kids work on the meat birds but I don't think its something you should put on front row as people walk through the barn. They are normaly messy and lazy birds. Not standing and going poo on themselves. I'm going to talk to the leader tomorrow about the layout and see if it can be changed so the other breeds will be on front display drawing people in and then see the meat birds.

JLaw. I will be at that fair on Tues for the poultry show! My kids are switching back to chaut. Co for 4h next year. We had gone to catt co bc my husband worked for extension over there but his position was eliminated so no reason to stay. I agree with you on the market birds. I'm glad you are willing to speak up

Morning all. Sorry to hear of your loss Gramma. I have a sexlink myself that isnt acting right and I suspect she may pass at some point. Not sure what is going on. No overt signs except for being off by herself and sleeping. She is fiesty when touched and has weight on her, eating and drinking but just not all that active. Baunlee--your bird is a pullet. She is a nice looking girl too. Jlaw--I hope you get that cocci under control. You should treat your whole flock. Be mindful that since you have it on your property, you will have to use medicated feed for any and all chicks you have. The chicken whisperer has a good blog with Dr Peter Brown on cocci. You will have to look it up in the archives.

The two roos I didnt process with the last bunch are getting whacked tomorrow. All I have heard this morning are the shrieks from the others in the pen as these two are bullying them. Now I am mad. I have jars. They will be in them by 9am tomorrow morning.

Dh had to catch and put the 7 reds back in with the terrorists. They still want to go back to the old coop. I suspect that will change when I cull some of the hens in there. The reds are becoming more assertive in getting food. It helps to have numbers on your side! Clyde tries to assert himself but he is young yet and gets cowed by the lead hens in there. He still has a lot of growing to do before he is able to lay down the law and become boss in the coop. My youngest reds are looking good but there will be more canning to do with them as well. Lots of little roos growing up. Trying to get my numbers down for winter. Biggest thing is the turnover of laying hens as I know about half my layers right now arent laying. Cant wait for the pullets to start.

There is a chipmunk that is raiding the food out of my juvenile silkies coop. I told dh that it must go. I am not feeding it and my silkies and I dont want any cooties from it in my coop or on my birds. Speaking of, the young man at the feed store just found lice on his birds. He was wondering why production dropped. Had a long discussion with him about treatment and such. Bringing him some permethryin so he can spray the coop down once he empties is. I know he has a big coop so its going to be a process for him. Nice kid though. He bought other stuff to treat his birds directly. I told him it happens to everyone and we chicken people try to help each other out.

Off to work again. Cant wait for my day off tomorrow. And the silence it will bring

I have a locked room mystery here. Last night I locked everyone up, and of course, the hardest to get in place was the two broodies, two chicks crate. The younger chick couldn't wrap her head around the concept of going around the extended door to get into the opening. To be fair, it is only a couple of days since she got too big to fit through the bars, and her mother is pleasant but has all but gone back to the coop, and feels no responsibility to or for the chick. This morning that chick was not in the crate, only the other chick and the two moms. I have gone all over the area, and find no piles of feathers or little chick. There was some loud cheeping this morning at 5:30, but when I had gotten up and could look out, I saw nothing out of place. The tarp covers the crate, so couldn't see in.

Will continue to look but think I won't find anything.

Are you going up kimmerjo?

Like I said earlier --- I will be there with the kiddos on Tuesday for the Poultry Show. The gentleman judging it is a true sweetheart. My Bantam Wyandottes all came from his stock - and I can't wait to get a couple more Black Hens from him to improve my collection.

I am going today with the kids. I might convince my husband to go tomorrow too. I love going to the barns I become a kid in a candy store!!

She is ok. Appeared she could have squeezed out, then hidden under the big coop. She is trying to join the mom with 3 younger chicks. She is not being made to feel welcome.

There you are. I was wondering where you went.
