NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a locked room mystery here. Last night I locked everyone up, and of course, the hardest to get in place was the two broodies, two chicks crate. The younger chick couldn't wrap her head around the concept of going around the extended door to get into the opening. To be fair, it is only a couple of days since she got too big to fit through the bars, and her mother is pleasant but has all but gone back to the coop, and feels no responsibility to or for the chick. This morning that chick was not in the crate, only the other chick and the two moms. I have gone all over the area, and find no piles of feathers or little chick. There was some loud cheeping this morning at 5:30, but when I had gotten up and could look out, I saw nothing out of place. The tarp covers the crate, so couldn't see in.

Will continue to look but think I won't find anything.

Chicks can get in some small places to hide. I once found a large chick head first in a cinderblock dead. I don't know if it got stuck in there first or got in there first and then got stock. Sometimes they go into a corner out of fear and just stay there til the die.

howdy all.

luvmychicks I find the ones who are on back tend to be ones I have to put down or I try to help and end up dieing. I hope it lives for ya. I always hate putting down a chick. It seems the ones on back or huge stomach tend to be bad off.
I turned it over on it's back so you could see how it's head was bending and how the one leg looked iffy. Poor thing hated it and was much happier once I turned it back over.

She is ok. Appeared she could have squeezed out, then hidden under the big coop. She is trying to join the mom with 3 younger chicks. She is not being made to feel welcome.
Glad that you found her and she is okay. When I had one of my momma and chicks in a crate I would come out in the morning to find her freaking out cause the chicks were out running around. I was very happy when they got big enough that they couldn't fit between the bars any more.

Chick Update:
It made it through the night. I was sure that I would wake up to a dead chick. DD says it is a little girl cause it is a fighter. It has straightened up and now isn't so crooked. It is also is using it's leg better which I was most afraid of. I told the kids that it still wasn't out of the wood and If I couldn't get it's leg figured out that it still not make it. I make sure to keep giving it drops of the sugar water and I'm sure that it helps a lot. The other chick stays close, but isn't bothering it. So hopefully it will pull through alright.

Glad it made it through the night ...cooked egg yolk is good for chicks too

I missed my regular egg customer on Thursday. He takes 9 dozen every week. I had to pick up the baby from my parents and got back later than expected. I'm so disappointed. I have 16 dozen in my frig and 3 days worth yet to wash. Anyone know of anyone wanting to buy eggs?

If anyone notices any job postings in the biology field or quality control/assurance in the central NY area please let me know. I'm job hunting and haven't had much luck.

My replacement batch of chicks from Meyer has a tracking number (no info on it yet, but that means they are entered into the shipping system). Hoping and praying this batch makes it with no issues!

I work for a small biotech company, but we're way out in Jamestown in WNY so not very close to you, unfortunately.

So a few days ago I saw a bee going into a hole in the wood just above our picture window. It's not yet painted. There are a number of hole too.

Well today DW hears a Knocking sound on the front of the house. It seems a Would Pecker is pecking at the wood. It's come back a few times since.

I had sprayed the holes to kill the bee but apparently there are larvae there. Bumbles drill holes I think and lay just few eggs. I've recently read an article on Bumbles. There are a number of varieties.

Some make nests in Tufts of grass.
Google carpenter bees....kill them!
