NY chicken lover!!!!

The fair was fun... My back and feet disagree:) I didn't get a real good chance to scope out the barns like I wanted but did a quick walk threw with the kids. This will only be my niece second year showing cows their show is tomorrow ,Thursday and Saturday. Might go back up :)

I want to go to the fair... our chicks were supposed to ship yesterday but the post office tracking system hasn't even scanned them in at the point of origin yet. Since our last batch was already in Buffalo by this point in time last week, I am not holding out much hope for these. If I get a second batch DOA, I am requesting a refund and will be on a search for local chicks. I am very frustrated right now - if Meyer did send the chicks to the post office last night, then they have been sitting there and haven't even been scanned in yet!

Caught another raccoon last night. That trap has been set but empty since the last one we caught. And this one was much bigger than the last.

I have my trio of Orps and two runner ducks up for grabs if anyone is interested. That's the last of what's left I've decided to part with before this move. The ducks are friendlier than most runners because my kids have handling them since day one. So they don't run as fast as the others did I had to get away from you. My kids still pick them up to this day.

Off to pack some more! Hope everyone is well!

The one thing I hate about chickens is you have to get rid of the unwanted and with everyone else hatching it's not easy. In order to keep things going you have to hatch and that means unwanted chicks.

I've eight EE/marans crosses to go and you know there'll be roos in there and no one wants those.

Then I've got those that need to be culled and I've never had this before. One marans hen has a swollen crop area for some unknown reason, she seems okay other wise, but I'm sure she's not laying. . One Ee chick has a stretched out crop and of course poor Buckwheat is still doing okay even though she waddles since her stomach is swollen.

These marans lay nice eggs, but being Birchens I'm hatching trying to weed the copper out of them. None of the roos chicks so far is as nice as the one I gave away nor the dad. I've got to hatch to see if I can get another nice rooster. Some of the pullets show promise but not many.

I think that the Little Chick That Could has a slipped tendon in it's bad leg.

I thought that it might be spraddle leg, but after doing more research I think that it is the slipped tendon which isn't good. I tried the stretching to pop it back in, but I don't know that I'm doing and can't tell if it is working. I think that I may have to put it down and I don't really want to. Has anyone ever had to deal with it? I'm just afraid that it is in a lot of pain.

If it's not walking well and you're sure it's in pain sooner is better than later. Point being chicks are fragile and succumb much easier the younger they are.

If you think it' might be spraddle leg I'd bandage it at night and let it rest. Night would be a time when it's asleep and resting. That is if you have the time to devote to it.

I have a chick right now with pasty but and doesn't look at that good. I'll continue cleaning and giving it time, since it's just the one. It's brooder mate is much fatter. I rescued it after a night with a hen who didn't pay it much attention. I'm beginning to think she knew it was a weakling. It got cold and after putting it under a heat light it revived. Now it doesn't seem to be thriving, even though it's not alone.

It's got those tell tale skinny legs and feet. Usually a sign of worse problems.

Oh, poor chickie. I hope it makes it, but I do think sometimes there's just something wrong with the ones that don't make it.

A question on pasty butts, since my chicks are coming in today (sorted through Buffalo according to tracking)... does anyone ever pre-treat chick butts with vaseline to prevent it in the first place? I have some Aquaphor and thought about putting some on their little heinies to prevent it from happening....

ugh I wish you were closer. I am having a hard time keeping up with demand lately. I'm only getting between 11-14 eggs a day from 28 hens...17 eggs on a good day. I don't know what's going on but they all appear healthy, no bugs...ughhh

I've never considered vaseline pre treatment. They are babies though so I'd be careful what I used.

Not all chicks get pasty butt. Two in the brooder and only one has pasty butt.

Good to know... I'll probably just watch and wait. Aquaphor is vaseline, but more refined (my kids needed it for eczema.. but it is basically fancy vaseline).
