Morning all. So sorry to hear that you cant have chickens lynzi. That stinks. Maybe your mom knows someone who would be willing to take yours until you find property. Kimmerjo, dont worry. They should be fine when you get them. The hardest part is waiting. I would come to see Lynzi off but I will be in Georgia visiting my daughters and looking at different areas for possible move locations. We are hedging our bets and looking because the company dh works for is slowly dying. When he retires or gets laid off, we are out of NY. Now dont get me wrong, NY is our home but things here are just going from bad to worse, between the taxes and rediculous laws and citiots running everything now. No regard from the legislatures for anyone other than city folks or those with money. Anyways, I wish you well Lynzi and will keep seeing you on the NY thread I hope. I dont think you are far from me as connecticut is just over the river from me.

Spent the day cleaning on monday and yesterday I put up the plastic lattice pieces I got from my mom. Set up two pieces on fenceposts behind my tomato plant and used them to support the plants. Put another small piece on the inside of the run in front of where the other two are and then used the long two pieces on the other two sides of the run. Looks nice. Love zipties. Makes it go quick. The girls are not happy they cant reach through the fence any more and eat my plants. Rotten hens. I think the plants will come back some. Clyde is crowing now. Hopefully he will get a real crow as this one sounds funny. He is really starting to develop now. His coloring and his tail are coming in nicely and he is getting bigger. Still has to fill out yet. My one rir pullet has roachback and I have been advised to cull her as it becomes painful as they get older. I am reluctant as I would like to use her for eggs. Anyone here have any experience with this condition? My other pullets look fine and there are really only two who I will hatch any eggs from. I am still sorting out the younger rir. Hope to get to them tomorrow.

I bought a pressure cooker and used it last night to cook one of the roos I had processed last week. Ohhh man, was he tasty! From raw to falling off the bone tender finger licking tasty in 20 minutes! I think I have found my new best cooking friend. Next will be venison pot roast. I will let you know how that comes out.

Loving this cooler weather. Sleeping with the windows open is the best.

Off to the pharm today. Have a good day everyone.

I've talked to DW about moving South as some states don't tax my retirement. NY taxes everything it seems. I like Alabama but the kids have moved to FL and they may move again before my son retires. I didn't care for their neighborhood but was told they could have chickens. They even had a TSC right around the corner.

I've never heard of "roach back" what is that? Do you have pics. ?

That pressure cooker sound great. I've never eaten yard raised chicken. The only time I've had non store bought chicken was at the Conference years ago.

Well take care, places to go, people to annoy.

Man, ya call DirectTV to cancel/move your service and they suck ya right in to all the upgrades/rebates and specials they have for ya because you're "such a valuable customer" or as I like to call it, Your company is hurting and you'll do anything to get me to stay! That's what it sounds like anyway. Either that or they work the same way as Kohl's and they jack their prices to make it sound like you're getting a good deal when they say you'll be credited or give a "discount price" when it should be free or discounted in the first place! Did I mention I hate moving? All these calls I have to make now to turn stuff off/start stuff up again. Ugh...I wish I could just snap my fingers and fast forward two weeks from now.

Missin my birdies. It was weird to wake up to no crowing this morning. Weird to not wake up and have birds waiting to be let out. Guess I'll go attempt to mow the lawn...this outta be interesting! Hopefully I can figure out how to turn it on!

Go mow mine. You can spend some time with your babies :)

One D'Uccle baby hatched out ... THREE days early .... other D'Uccle shows no signs of pip yet - hope it comes soon so I can take momma and wee babies out of the nest and let the other hen hatch out the large fowl eggs for their last days.

What a circus .... At one point I had a box with 2 hens a nest with 3 hens and a nest with 2 hens ....

That is 7 hens to 3 clutches of eggs ... sheesh louise.

They made it!!!! One Speckled Sussex was DOA:) a few looking weak but they all drank and ate. How often should I check for pasty butt?

I would just keep an eye on them, but don't stress them. They'll sleep a lot at first. I usually just give them water and medicated feed for a while.

You have them on paper towels? That's fine I usually do the same for a couple of days to make sure they're all eating and pooping.

Congratulations. I wish you great success.

congrats on the hatch. Sometimes there is no pip. One minute nothing the next you come in and there they are.

I've been pulling chicks from the BR hen and her EE copilot who decided just a week or so ago she wanted to brood. I've got another EE that is broody but I keep pulling her out of the box.

One BR had one egg left and it was bad so I tossed it. I don't know what to do with all these broodies. I can't have chicks of various ages, though I do have four B. Marans chicks in the brooder now. Plus two hens with 17 total.

I did have a lot of hits for "free chicks" from CL. No one would even offer a trade of horse manure or nothing. They had to go in order to keep room for the ones I want to keep.

I've kept the Dels and C. Rocks and one EE that I think is a pullet. So far. Not sure what I'll keep out of the others. One Lavender EE looks to be a roo. If so he has to go.

EE's are hard to sex and sometimes don't show til late. I'm basing some things on the size of the legs.
