NY chicken lover!!!!

congrats on the hatch. Sometimes there is no pip. One minute nothing the next you come in and there they are.

I've been pulling chicks from the BR hen and her EE copilot who decided just a week or so ago she wanted to brood. I've got another EE that is broody but I keep pulling her out of the box.

One BR had one egg left and it was bad so I tossed it. I don't know what to do with all these broodies. I can't have chicks of various ages, though I do have four B. Marans chicks in the brooder now. Plus two hens with 17 total.

I did have a lot of hits for "free chicks" from CL. No one would even offer a trade of horse manure or nothing. They had to go in order to keep room for the ones I want to keep.

I've kept the Dels and C. Rocks and one EE that I think is a pullet. So far. Not sure what I'll keep out of the others. One Lavender EE looks to be a roo. If so he has to go.

EE's are hard to sex and sometimes don't show til late. I'm basing some things on the size of the legs.
if you have room, you could get a couple hutches with wire mesh bottom. The mesh makes it uncomfortable to sit and will eventually 'break' their broody mood.

Well I figured out the John Deere!! Lawn is mowed and looking pretty good if I may say so myself! At least I know I can do it now.

Well two more have died:'( one was a golden laced wyandotte and two speckled Sussex. There is still two that are pretty weak... So sad. I will call the hatchery in the morning. Hope they make it threw the night.

I am nervous about moving them. I once moved a BO and she got sick and died. For now I just keep taking the eggs. She usually only has one since the other EE is sitting on eggs.

I'm going to take some from another hen who is sitting and has been. Not sure when they'll hatch, but then I have to deal with the problem of where to let her brood chicks.

The EE rooster and Marans are not as nice as my del. The last time either of these coops had chicks they ended up dead. My Del roo and the hens just don't bother with the chicks.

Missin my birdies. It was weird to wake up to no crowing this morning. Weird to not wake up and have birds waiting to be let out. Guess I'll go attempt to mow the lawn...this outta be interesting! Hopefully I can figure out how to turn it on!
Your girls are doing great! Stella is looking kind of bare with her molting, but she fits in with a few of my girls that have decided to molt..Is molting contagious?

It looks like a pillow exploded out there! They are out and about with the rest of the flock now. They are staying close to the run, but are venturing out to eat up some of my black berries. Ella was doing her Nancy moves today acting crazy running around the run. She is trying to find her place in the pecking order, but with her being the biggest not to many are bothering her, that and I think that it is more fun to pick on the little kids then the 2 new girls.

Aww that's good to hear. They're going to be so happy there. Especially since they'll have a nice break from Gru.

My Maran hen from Tab & Trav 2013 tried going broody in the nest boxes in June, but that is not a safe place for her to stay or chicks to hatch. She wouldn't stay in the coop boxes, so was put in the Eglu of Shame for a couple days. She broke, returned to laying and now is trying broody again. And again in the nest boxes. It is a wall mount 10-hole unit, 18" off the ground. Also, eggs get crushed under her because someone else climbs in on top of her. It is in the horse barn, but that is not closed up like the coop at night. We keep trying to put her in the coop boxes, but she sits for a minute, then runs out to eat, drink, and jump back in the wall boxes. Got my June chicks in the one Eglu, so looks like I'll have to set up the second Eglu this weekend to break her.

I ordered 8 from mypetchicken 3 weeks ago, lost 3 of the 8. They have an issue with shipping where they get stuck in cleveland, I won't order from them again. When I told them that I lost the birds I had to e-mail because it was after hours, and it took 5 days for them to respond, only to tell me they'd only refund if I ordered again and they'd take it off my order. No way I'm going to spend money to get back a refund or free birds with free shipping that I deserve. I hope you have better luck than I did.

I'm sorry you had such problems with MPC. I lost a shipment of 14 to the extreme cold back in March. I called them and the lady I spoke with was very helpful. They re-imbursed me for all chicks, no questions asked. I will not do mail order again because I think the fault lies with the postal service. Until it improves significantly it's just not worth the risk.
