NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning Everyone,
So the other day I decided to place an ad on CL looking for "Chicken Housing" or what I described in my details, a yard or land to keep my small flock on. I've gotten a couple of emails back from people who say they'd love to help me and allow me to keep my chickens at their place. Two people are an hour away the third I haven't heard back from yet. Now with them being an hour away they both have offered to care for them for me as well so that I don't have to drive there every day, maybe just on weekends or once a week. But this has me thinking now. Sure it sounds great that they'd be an hour from me instead of 4.5 but at the same time, I wonder if these people are just looking for "free" nice quality birds. I guess I'd have to meet with them and get a feel for what they're like. I'd have to draw up a contract LOL

Notice the intruder sleeping with her nose in the corner. Not sure shy Edie's Sister allowed it. She's a mean one.

(THESE PHOTOS ARE OVER 2 WEEKS OLD) She slept all night with 6 chicks under her until she flew the coop.

Having troubles with my computer so I'm late in responding.

Armorfirelady, my chicks hatched within a day of yours and have been roosting for about 3 weeks. A week ago Twisted sister decided that she'd had enough of motherhood, laid her first egg since the hatch and jumped over the fence and in with all the other adult chickens, never looking back at her chicks. They were a little lost at bedtime but are fine now.

The 2 BCM: one of the hens left the "little commune" and went back with the others weeks ago. The remaining hen only rounds her's up at bedtime but the chicks are so large there isn't any room for Mom but she isn't ready to go back with the adults yet.

Edie's sister still mothers hers all the time and they still sleep under her at night.

Cecilia, the Sizzle has 1 Silkie chick and still mothers a little but they are separated most of the day. At night the little one sleeps under Cecilia.

They all have roosts and some choose to and some don't.

We are putting on the 3rd addition to our original coop. Trying to have all the chickens in one area but some will be separated. Last night I got the idea that we have bugs. Tonight we start dusting. It was easier dusting 20 birds than the 60 that I've aquired. All the juveniles and babies are at a distance from the adults but might as well dust them anyway. If you don't hear from me for the next month or 2, you'll know I'm still dusting.

I put an ad on Craig's List wanting 2 one day old chicks to put under my 2 late in being broody hens and got just 1 response. A man has bantam's he'll sell. 3 days old. I decided not to as I don't want to get into such small birds. I guess I'm making a trip to Geneva. My only complaint with A&J Hatchery was the hidden costs. My chicks were healthy enough.

Leah's Mom, not sure if I posted this but we ate Wrinkles the BCM roo with the frost bitten comb and bad legs. I could never clear up what ever was the matter with his legs and I didn't want to sell him and give someone else the problem.

Sorry I'm rambling. A lot to catch up on.

I'm sorry you had such problems with MPC. I lost a shipment of 14 to the extreme cold back in March. I called them and the lady I spoke with was very helpful. They re-imbursed me for all chicks, no questions asked. I will not do mail order again because I think the fault lies with the postal service. Until it improves significantly it's just not worth the risk.
I've tried to explain that things have changed with the PO but folks still insist on ordering chicks in small amounts. The last three ordered I received were late and many poor chicks lost their lives.

Please try to find someone local. If you get roos there is always someone who will take them off your hands. You could pay a bit more and get older but sexed birds.

Or find someone to go in on an order with you and and order from a bigger hatchery. I ordered 25 chicks from Ideal and all made it alive in February. But that was in 2008 before the PO went down the tubes. Hatcheries are NOT better than individual breeders. Many times when there is an outbreak of disease it's the hatcheries.

You could also write your congressman to require the PO to give higher priority to shipped animals.

Back in 1915 the PO wanted to NOT deliver periodicals to rural areas, perhaps that is their goal now to not deliver live animals.

You know Paul & I were talking yesterday about how laid back Edie is. She does not chase or go after anyone including the chicks. She is very laid back and the peace keeper. I am glad to see that she has the same dirty face that Edie sports daily. I tell her its a face only a mother could love.

Your black chicks have more white in their chests then my 4. 2 have like a small white tux front, one just has a white spot and the other is somewhere in between. None are roosting. I am going to try putting a roost in tonight thats lower and away from the big girls and see what they do.

Sorry to hear about the potential bugs. If need be I can bring a bucket of ash down with me at the end of the month for you to have for your hens.

I woke up and checked the coop and found one of my "white pullets " by door on side head upside down she took a few breaths looked at me and then passed I think she was a white rock from tsc
