NY chicken lover!!!!

Perhaps I can be of some help.  Try [email protected].   She's just north of you on Grannis Rd.  I have family up that way.

I've considered buying one of those two burner cookers from Gander Mountain to use.  TSC had some outdoor sinks for sale this year.  I figure a half hoop with those two things stored in them would be a good set up. I don't think it would go over very well with the school across the road seeing me process chickens.

I'm glad your hen survived.  I've never had that happen here and sort of glad I haven't.

Oh and don't stay away so long.  :old

Thanks!! That is right around the corner from me.

I have had my eye on a couple of large pots on overstock but keep forgetting to order until it's time to process lol.

The last batch of 8wk old chicks I got from you are doing great!

Rancher, I have been told that when you move chickens you need to keep them in their new place for a week so they know where home is. That means shut in the coop for a week. Of course that always seems like cruel and unusual punishment, so I do three days, and that has worked.

What I found out was from my gr, gr grandfathers fight to get his Civil War pension. It was not any easier then than now. Perhaps even worse since we have the internet to shoot correspondence back and forth. I learned about his health issues from the letter and examinations the docs performed as proof of his disability. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in the end. Then my grandmother petitioned and got a widows pension.
that's so true ..we just cant seem to get these things right for some reason ..its a shame we are dedicating medals to folks who fought in wars long ago after they have already have passed ..its the same with a lot of folks like your family member that had to fight to get what is rightfully theirs and they are intitled to benefits ..i no i had to show proof of my military services after there was a fire were they kept military records back in the 80's..like i would have anything other then a 214 form to show as proof ..and why i had to show proof i was in the military when they are the ones with all the records ..not my fault they let the place burn up ..

i am glad your gr gr grandmother was able to get what was rightfully hers ..its just to bad he didnt get to see any of it ..

A few quick questions about the hen that's been sitting on the eggs now for 10 days. I candled the eggs and don't seem to find any indication at all that any of them are fertile. They are from 2 hens. There's no veining in any shell and one egg shell looked dark but didn't look like it had anything in it. Could it be to cold out in the coop? It's inside the back hall, but the temperature does go down at night. She left the nesting box once and when she went back up to the nesting box she went into the wrong box. I moved all of her eggs to her new area and she's been on them since, about 3 or so days. The eggs don't feel very warm, she has them moved around and sometimes she's sitting on 3 or 4 and the others are off to the side. I think the other hen moved 3 eggs out from under the broody Silkie and was sitting on them for a day, trying to "help her out", lol. But then the nonbroody frizzle abandoned those 3 eggs next to the Silkie and they were just sitting there out in the open.

Suggestions?

He eventually got his disability and a couple of time got it increased. He'd been examined by doctors. Some said he didn't have what the other said he did have. Folks weren't anymore kind about disability then as now I think. Course doctors didn't get sued then I suppose.

My great gr, grandmother eventually got $40 a month after he died. She got extra for the kids but I don't think he did.

The funny thing is my family is out in Central square and the area where Lomenzo and Hannah got married. We never knew where they came from. Course that's just on my grandmothers side. I did learn Hannah's maiden name so now I need to make a new folder for her side.

You've got an antique place down there in Cleveland I've been meaning to go to. I'd check all the second hand stores for a pot. If you just need to heat up some water to dunk a dead chicken in, I can 't see you'd need a special pot. Just a large one.

General water bath canning doesn't require a special pot to much.

I reckon they're not fertile.

I had a hen hatch in the late winter when it was below zero. If you can't quarantine her I'd give up hatching. Not all hens are good setters. Some can't seem to make up their minds.

Could it be the roo shooting blanks? There's 7 eggs from 2 hens. I suppose we could incubate.

It might be but I doubt it.

What kind is he? Where did you get him from? How old is he? Have you seen him dance with the girls? Did you check for fertility before setting eggs? Do the girls have big skirts?
How does one check for fertility? The only roo we have is Fredo. He hatched from an Ebay egg end of December. He does dance with both of his ladies. Both hens are very fluffy, one's the silkie and the other is the frizzle silkie/cochin cross. I put the eggs back under the black silkie, thought maybe if I give it another week something may happen? Just odd that at Day 10 there's nothing at all visible. I remember when we incubated we had veining visible before day 10. I gave her more wood chips for insulation. The other 2 birds leave her alone though, they don't pick on her at all.
