Also try hand feeding her some layer . or cheese or milk or yougurt ..to increase her calcium ..she still may not be getting enough .
I am guessing that they always clean up the food ?
do you feed pellets ? sometimes they go too fast through the system ..and are not all absorbed ..
If you dont do fermented feed ...you could moisten it with water or milk so it dissolves some more .( if you use milk you would need to keep a eye on it ..as it can spoil .)
Do you give them treats ? what do you give them ? you could give them or just her some bread moistened in milk

Well Buckwheat is swelling up again so I'll quarantine her. I think it's from not having enough calcium and that's creating a problem laying.

I'll put her back in the crate and perhaps stick Cotton Bud in there with her.

Hello, it's been awhile since I posted. This year I have been good about not buying eggs to hatch or chicks to raise, however, my hens have had other ideas, and I am over run! Even with the awful predation of a weasel (curse him! glad he's gone) I still have thirteen Serama babies to find homes for. No one told me Seramas were so prolific, or so broody, I have more than enough for myself and the enormous coop I bought for them and now I have to gather eggs daily to keep them from raising more babies. If you would like some, I can send you pictures and gladly go back to a more reasonable number of birds. My marans and my Ameraucana hens also decided I needed more chicks, and it is crazy out there. I even have a serama and her two babies sleeping in the living room (at night) and foraging in the garden during the day because there is just not enough room! Many are frizzles, several are all white, some are brown and gray and white, we have quite the color range. Please help me find them good homes.

Got a visit from a chicken fairy last night...

I mentioned to a family friend that I was having problem with one spot in my chicken run (you can see a little of it in the back) that wouldn't stay dry. I was telling him that I needed to put something down but I didn't have that much money. We got talking about wood chips from when they are logging and that it may work. Didn't think that they would bring me a whole dump truck load! Looks like I'll be super busy for a few days. I'm pretty sure that I have more then I need for the chicken yard so I'll probably put some in the dark yard too. It smells so good! Almost like Christmas...Love that pine smell!!

i picked up a egg this morning , no cracks still misshapen but had a thin side it looked like ..i will give her more calcium in her feed ..i think you maybe right on how much shes getting in her system..
she does get pellets ..i used to use crmble but it seem they wasted alot of it ..
i do give treats ..mostly crack corn but i have started to give meal worms ..they do get alot of tomatoes and veggies this time of yr and i give them grass clipping when i mow but not a lot..
i no they love cheese but i read somewere cheese wasnt in their diet in nature and shouldnt be given ..but then it said that about all milk or dairy products..i no yogurt is given to fix digestion ..with all the info out there its hard to tell whats worth reading and beleaving and whats not ..i started to read about fermented feed but then it seem like all they mentioned so far was broilers and not layers..i no they use it to beef up the meat birds fast for culling..lol..beef up ..sorry i found that kind of funny for some odd reason ..

Well it MUST have been quite a while to be label a "new egg"

In either case you don't note where you're located. I'm not sure why folks are reluctant to note that. You really should gather eggs daily whether they sit or not. It helps tempt them to eat the eggs as well.

You could post a few pictures. I don't have Seramas but do add Amers now and then since I'm into EE's. What kind of marans do you have?

Well now where are you located and who was this fairy? I could use a truck load to fill in as it's taking me forever using coop cleanings. I've an area that get flooded and my first pass with the snow blower is very wet. I've been trying to fill in enough to make a path wide enough for the snowblower.

Quote: There is alot of mis-Information out there ..I know It is hard to know what to believe .
I would say you are probably overdoing the treats for her ...she might be low on calcium for some reason .
My chickens have eaten all dairy products including cheese ...they eat everything we eat ..including left overs ..
They loved mac & cheese that my sister in law donated to them
They also get raw onions garlic .on the list of no nos.
The reason I suggested cheese is it would be easy to feed it just to her .

what their original diet was .......Im sure todays chickens are a lot different than the original model ...longs they get a healthy diet thats what matters .
Old farmers just gave chickens corn & occasional milk ..the rest they found for them selves

I have only layers ...they all get fermented feed ...those who ferment on the thread also have layers.
I started it because of the mess they made ...Now they eat less & absorb all that they eat ..less waste
