NY chicken lover!!!!

Anyone have any ideas of a cheap way to make some rooster pens that I can keep outside near/at my chicken coop? I tried calling some True Value stores near by to see if they got their supplies in wooden shipping crates like my old hardware store did but they don't. I need to find a cheap way to do this but something durable as well.

Dog houses. You can usually find them on craigslist cheap or free. You might have to do a bit of reinforcement but they work well.

Do you still need egg cartons?
yes I could still use them. Though I am considering giving up some birds. Some young, some roosters, some older.

Things with DW are hard sometimes and I need to have more time.

I could use some advice. If I can downsize at least one half hoop that would be good.

Don't know for sure, but I was told that if you have skunks living round by you, predators tend to stay away - sounds logical, so I guess they do have some benefits..... I don't know of any deterrent/management to keep skunks away other than trapping...........

Well now I have a story. I had a nest of yellow jackets? built a nest in a pile of grass clippings I'd been piling up next to my mailbox. I hit the nest a couple of times mowing grass. I did avoid getting stung, thank the Lord. Even though I'd sprayed I couldn't get right INTO the nest.

So the other day I noticed that the nest had been torn all out and there was a hole under the area they would have hollowed out? I could see parts of the paper nesting stuff, kind of what you see wasps building under your soffits.

Any ideas what would have done that? What would have been impervious to the stings? We did have a few nights where it was chilly.

That is one thing that seriously irks me... when people move into a neighborhood and then complain to make the neighbors conform to their idea of what things should be like... This happened in Nantucket... there was a farm with chickens and roosters and then people bought adjacent land and built a home and then complained about the rooster crowing... so the 100 year old farm (maybe older) had to get rid of the roosters. Like, really???? I would say, if you visited the land before sale... you knew... so tough chicken sh...
My land has been a tourist spot for a few hundred years... from native americans on... we had to put up posted signs because the world has become so litigious.

that drives me crazy! We moved to a lake community this summer and I knew moving in here that I was not allowed to keep chickens because I obviously researched it before hand. So I am now renting land from someone and have finally got my chickens down here. One of the members of the "board" here stopped by the other day to "welcome" us to the area and I was telling him how much I didn't like it here and how we only plan to rent from our landlord for a year because I need land, my own space and to be able to do whatever the heck I want with no restrictions. He told me how Yes, that was a tough choice for them to make here (no animals allowed to be housed on the lot - livestock, poultry, etc) especially with one woman here because she was here before they even started this community and she raised goats. So I asked what happened? He said that she had to rehome her goat! REALLY?!? That woman was here FIRST and SHE had make the changes? Makes me soo soo mad.

Along the lines of the rooster coop question... should I have a spot that I can close off inside the coop for a rooster or can he be shut up with the girls at night?

Oh he can be kept with them, I'm trying to set up breeding pens is all. I have about 13 or so birds right now and 3 of them are roosters that I know of. So far they all getting along but there are certain birds I want certain roosters to be breeding with so if I keep them all together I won't know who's fertilizing who and so on.

All my roos are in with my hens ... no problemo ... I only even separate by breeds ONLY during the lead up to waning pure eggs for hatching

Hello everyone. Hope all is well. Have been offline for a bit, crazy busy.

A while back I lived in CT & worked in NW corner where it's a bit more rural than most of the state. I remember listening to a coworker complain that there was too much wildlife near his house & he was worried about his children being outside. According to him the wildlife should stay off his property. Lol. Talk about being there first.
