NY chicken lover!!!!

Thanks to Cass for answering your question. I just saw your question now, sorry boskelli...

I can possibly help you with the new call you're hearing from the woods; if you can get a sound clip, let me know. It's like "Name That Tune" and will be a challenge. No earth shattering sightings here, either, but there's still time. Green herons are always a thrill to see. Love the Kingfisher's brassy rattle!

some friends had invited me and the wife out on their boat for a slow cruise threw the outlet on chautauqua lake the other day ..we spotted a white heron ..it was pure white ..we couldnt get close enough to get any pics ..it seem to avoide us as much as possible ..i figure with it be so white it has to hide alot to stay alive ..very pretty tho ..we seen some of the small herons as well ..i beleive they are the green ones you are talking about ..atleast thats what my buddy was calling them ..as we came back out of the outlet we saw some cammerons ..[i no nice spelling right ] the ones that dive in the water ..anyways the whole north side of the lake the trees were covered with them ..there must have been thousands of them ..i guess their poo is killing all the trees along the lake there ..i grew up here as a kid , we never had any of those around back then ..but then i never seen any bald eagles as kid around here either but theres a few pair of them around now ..

I have a bunch of green tomatoes as well & the plants are still blooming. I am going to give it a few days after the rain passes and see of they ripen any. You could always make a green tomato relish with them to can. Lots of recipes online. Usually they need the heat to ripen but I just picked some cherry tomatoes yesterday that were ripe
i do as well ..but i am taking them down now ..my mom said to make chilla sauce out of them ..she has a great recipe ..i think its really called chilli sauce but she always called it chilla suace..no matter what ya call it i still say yummmm..lol

Cormorants - snake like neck and those birds can dive DEEP ! Beautiful birds to watch - but invasive now.

Yeah, they are all over the south - but have invaded here now .... Vermont addles their eggs so the reproduction rate is slowed - and still they go crazy.

Dreary day here again. Haven't let the cheeps out yet cuz it's been rainy all morning. My father inlaw is helping me build a better run for them so I can easily walk in and out of the run and hopefully have it covered come winter. I'm contemplating brining Stella and Ella over to my moms. She keeps dropping hints that she think it'd be cool to have some chickens herself. I don't want to give those two up but I hate to see them confined in a run. I can't let them free range over there cuz there are two labs in the yard all day everyday and Jamie has told me that the dogs will probably go after them if they ever got out. If they were at my mom's they'd be able to free range at least. Idk, I'll have to do some more thinking about it. Also see what my mom's thoughts are in it.

Hi, wny egger!

It is likely that the "white heron" you saw was a great egret. Although I rarely see this species here in CNY, when I do, it is usually in the spring or fall (migration times). Here is a pic you can compare your sighting with:

Did the birds your friend called green herons look like this? They are much smaller than great blue herons, and often appear hunched up and dark from a distance...very pretty up close.

Double-crested cormorants are invasive to our area, but they have set up shop to stay Some people hate them. In large numbers they can negatively impact vegetation with their droppings. We see them up at our lake cottage in Ontario, Canada, too, but their numbers have not exploded on our lake, fortunately. We have no problems with them there. They are impressive divers and eat fish...the adults have cool blue eyes.

Hope this little bird lesson helped! It's fun to learn a few new species each year.......but then I'm a "bird nerd!"

PS: Bald eagles are making a strong come-back after the pesticide DDT caused their populations to crash by thinning their eggshells and ruining hatches. The pesticide was banned and now they are "soaring" back! Always a thrill to see, and now those sightings are coming with some regularity here in the Finger Lakes region. Awesome! Glad you got to see some by your neck of the woods.

I cracked the egg into a cup and it has a little ring of blood. This was after many days. Chicken Nugget, on the left took the remaining eggs away from Beak A Poo. Beaks not on any eggs, although she took one back, which I took away. I gave Nugget 3 eggs that were fresher. Not sure if anything will hatch but she wanted to try. That's a new photo of Fredo.

On tomatoes, you can pick off all the blossoms, they will not have time to become tomatoes, and the plant should concentrate its energy on the tomatoes that are on the plants. If it will be safe temps for a while, you can leave the fruit on the plant. If a frost is threatened, you can pick the tomatoes. As long as they have Cotten that whitish tone to them and are not just clear green, they can ripen inside. They say to wrap each tomatoe in newspaper and check them frequently so they don't rot on you. Sunlight actually does not aid the tomatoes in ripening, so the windowsill is not the best place, and if they should start to leak, your finish on the sill can be damaged. With the newspaper method one year I had tomatoes until Thanksgiving.

I bought a timer and a rope light to go in the coop. We are not getting many eggs and I am spoiled.

Where we fish in the Thousand Islands the Comorants are everywhere. I was told that the DEC is keeping track of their growth because they are taking over the Loons area and because they can dive so deep are eating all the small fish making less fish available for fishing
