NY chicken lover!!!!

She lives in a kennel cage within the coop; free ranges when I can supervise.

It's a tough situation. I am considering a friend for her, but it would have to be the right match.

TOB
she should be okay then if she is in the coop with the others ..they will provide some heat for her ..even if she is in her little cage by herself .
If you are worried about her ...being cold check her at night after she has been roosting for a while & see if she is cold ..she will probably be warm and toasty .

Ducks are as messy, almost as bad as pigs when in the brooder, stink!
Muscovy's arn't?

Muscovies don't play in their water as much as mallard based ducks. I keep all water outside, even for the chickens, and that helps the coops stay drier. My mallard based flock of 12 is housed separately and they are really messy with their water. They are not nearly as tame and people friendly as the muscovies. The muscovies get in the water to wet down their feathers once a day and the preen. After that they spend most of the day foraging around and socializing. The pekins, rouens, and mixes life revolves around their water and they do not stop until it is gone. They have a kiddie pool and when it gets down to a couple of inches they lay around and sulk.

Brooding muscovies is a bit messier than chicks because their poop is so liquid, but they are better at not slopping water all over. They are also smarter and like interacting with their human.

I plan to! Are you going to be coming to Chickenstock in the spring? If so I'll hatch and bring some for you if you'd like! I should have muscovies too.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in with their experiences keeping everything together. The other user was just making it sound like it was impossible and that he had heard so from animal science departments and things and I was just staring out at my birds living together with no problems and wondering how the heck I had managed it if no one else could, lol.

I certainly hope to get to Chickenstock next year, that would be fabulous! I'll pm you for sure, but I'm thinking about 4-5 hens & 1 drake. Someone turned me on to duck eggs, at least, that's my excuse!

Evening All,
Well not even 12 hours in their new run and I had an "attack". Not sure if it was a hawk or a fight between two rooster/cockerels but I went to lock up tonight to find a bird dead in the corner of the run.  I drove up, saw a huge pile of feathers in the run near the coop door and thought Oh no, what happened!? Since it was near dark out there I slowly approached the run incase there was something like a raccoon or something similar in there...I looked inside the coop thru the nestbox door and counted everyone - Sizzle Roo, Little Fella the Blue Orp Roo, Stella, Ella, Chickaletta and Henrietta and the New Splash Orp roo. So they were all accounted for. Went into the run, locked up the coop door and found my little blue Frizzled Sizzle Roo in the corner with a huge gash in his chest. Went back to my car to grab a bag from my trunk to remove him. What is kind of leaving me wondering is this...Yes this new run has an open top but it has a couple of pieces of wood across the top to keep all the panels in place. IF it was a hawk attack, wouldn't the hawk have taken this little guy out of the run? Also, he barely had any feathers missing. The feather pile that was left in front of the coop were lighter in color - like Stella's or the new Orp Roo's color. Do you think Hawk or fight with another roo in the run? I'll look everyone over in the morning and see who else is missing feathers or has any injuries but they all looked fine when I peeked in there tonight. If Stella is missing feathers then I'll suspect a hawk attack but if the new Roo is missing a lot then maybe it was a fight between the two in which case he will need to be separated. I can't have him picking on my other two roos in there.

I'm not too upset about this loss because he wasn't the greatest quality sizzle and I was actually contemplating selling him but I hate that I don't have them in my backyard to tell what happened! I'll be placing some chicken wire over the top tomorrow morning just in case.

I would think a hawk would grab and go unless something scared it off.

Can another rooster make a gash? Must have been some fight with lots of feathers. Let us know what you find this am..

i think the person with the chickens showing up at her place is just trying to do the right thing for those birds ..and i am not sure they want to keep the birds .. i no we all mean well but it seems like we are not seeing the trouble here .and we are not really helping them by saying she should build a coop and step into ownership of these birds ..i wished i live closer i would go get those birds ..they sound like a nice 3 pack of sussex..if anyone who lives near this person and has the room and ability to take 3 birds and quarinteen them for 30 days , i bet this person would just give you 3 rare breed birds to add to your flock ..i just wished i lived closer and could take them ..

Where are there "Chickenstocks" in NYS?

Tab usually hosts a get together each year where all of us from this thread go and have a meet up. I went last year and it was awesome! There's usually a raffle to help with the costs of hosting, lots of presales so you can ask people to bring what you want from them, and then a lot of people bring extras too so you can do a little extra shopping if you want.

Lynzi777 your splash smilies are so pretty!! They tolerate baths?
They're pretty good when it comes to bathing them. I blow dry them out after so I think they enjoy that most, especially in these colder months. They letting the heat hit them.

Well, I went to let the cheeps out this morning, looked everyone over and they all look fine. No one seems to be missing any feathers. So that's why I'm having a hard time figuring out who these feathers belong to...

The bird that was killed was a dark blue frizzled sizzle. These look gray. I feel like I had a "mystery bird" that was taken LOL One that I didn't know I had and is now gone leaving evidence behind. Owell...I put some netting over the top of the run this morning just in case there is a hawk lingering around.

I *think* SoNew said she was going to host this summer. Actually early spring when we are all hatching. I haven't seen her on this thread lately and my memory of that day is fuzzy as I wasn't feeling 100% (or even 50% actually, but I wouldn't miss it just for having a bad day)

Tab? Who said they were hosting in 2015?
