NY chicken lover!!!!

They're pretty good when it comes to bathing them. I blow dry them out after so I think they enjoy that most, especially in these colder months. They letting the heat hit them.

Well, I went to let the cheeps out this morning, looked everyone over and they all look fine. No one seems to be missing any feathers. So that's why I'm having a hard time figuring out who these feathers belong to...

The bird that was killed was a dark blue frizzled sizzle. These look gray. I feel like I had a "mystery bird" that was taken LOL One that I didn't know I had and is now gone leaving evidence behind. Owell...I put some netting over the top of the run this morning just in case there is a hawk lingering around.

Maybe those are from the owl that attacked? Or a falcon? But probably they are the underfeathers of one of your birds, which is why you don't see any missing on your birds.

tab mentioned to me she probably wont have one this year ....she prefers every couple years as it is a lot of work to get the farm ready for chicken stock .
Maybe someone else could host it this year ?
i think the person with the chickens showing up at her place is just trying to do the right thing for those birds ..and i am not sure they want to keep the birds .. i no we all mean well but it seems like we are not seeing the trouble here .and we are not really helping them by saying she should build a coop and step into ownership of these birds ..i wished i live closer i would go get those birds ..they sound like a nice 3 pack of sussex..if anyone who lives near this person and has the room and ability to take 3 birds and quarinteen them for 30 days , i bet this person would just give you 3 rare breed birds to add to your flock ..i just wished i lived closer and could take them ..

Yes someone is near her ...Cass ..
she encouraged her to put up a flyer in the grocery store ? to see if someone lost them & is looking for them .
I think the 1st step is to see if they belong to someone ...if no one claims them ...then someone can take them
I think Cass would take them if they were offered to her .
I think someone mentioned a coop for the chickens safety ..they are roosting high up in a tree ...safe from foxes probably ..
But not from coon , opossum , etc

I'd offer but I have a feeling I'm quite a hike for everybody. Tab is maybe 3 and half hours from me and I think most everyone is up that way. Plus I live out in the middle of nowhere and it's definitely gorgeous, but not the easiest place to find!

She sent me a private message since I'm about 10 minutes down the road from her. It's funny because I have 3 speckled Sussex hen's so I had a moment of panic thinking they were mine haha

She messaged me on Friday and unfortunately I've been out of town and didn't see it until today :( I messaged her about it and if they are still hanging around I will probably try to go get them. I'm not sure if I would want to keep them but I do have a small unused coop to keep them in for awhile at least so they are protected.

I see that there are quite a few chicken owners in the Albany region or close to it in the Mohawk/Schoharie valley.
Has anyone ever looked into doing a swap at the Altamont Fair? My husband is on the Board of Directors there. Do people just usually do them on their own private property because of legal issues with selling livestock/poultry? I've only been to one swap so far and it was in Sloansville on private property.

(I'm just south of Albany in Selkirk...was trying to brainstorm a place to have a spring swap locally since Sloansville was a 45-minute drive for me!)

Thanks!
Sarah

Maybe Cass...The whole thing is just weird and driving me nuts - I hate not having them in my own backyard. I looked Stella and my new roo over this morning to see if they seemed to be missing any feathers but they both seemed fine. No scars or marks on them. I just find it odd that they've been living over there since Mid-Sept with just that deer netting over the top, I finally put up a new run that isn't covered for just a few hours before locking them up and something already took a chance of getting in there and grabbing one? And everyone else is fine? I'm leaning towards rooster fight. I'll have to keep an eye on this new roo I got a few weeks ago. He IS the biggest in there and seems to getting along fine with Elvis my Sizzle roo, but if he starts going after my little blue Orp growing out I'll have to separate the three Orps and maybe give the Silkies back this larger run.

I would like to have some "bling/eye candy" in the yard--I like big, fluffy, Heritage breeds.  Hence, the attraction to Orpingtons and Wyandottes.  Not big into the smaller, flightly, super-rare, or speckled birds.  Don't know why--just like a solid, meaty looking bird.  My Welsummers & Brown Leghorns are pretty & shimmery, but crazy hard to catch in the yard!  I like the more chill, relaxed Pioneers and Orps and Rocks for hanging out with.  Hoping Wyandottes have a similar laid back personality :)

Sarah,
I feel the same, I want my layers and then I want some pretty social butterflies, it would be great if they could be both. I will be traveling to Virginia in the spring for a reenactment, was thinking of seeing if anyone was on my route home to stop and buy chicks. That is April tho. I wouldn't mind picking some up for you too.
