Here is a pic of my guy. It's a little blurry but he is basically red, brown, blue/black, and green/black all over. He is really pretty and should make some pretty babies with my girls.

I have a 3 hoop coop and the skeleton of a new coop near it with roof on ....
Great Horned Owl ... LOVELY bird .... eyeing my chickies ... I have gone out 5 times to shoo it away - it is getting bolder each time.
Whoooooo knows what to do ?
ha ha ha ha I recommend everyone sneak up on a predator and Booga Booga the begesus out of it .... made my night.

I would say keep making it miserable ..be creative
Leave a light on ...Put a oscillating fan out there .
Go out with a cooking pot & metal spoon & bang the thing as loud as you can ,..& chase it
Leave a radio with heavy metal music on ..out there.
Do you have a dog you can put out there near the chickens ?
Sleep with the chickens ?
ALL I can think of right now ..

I almost hit a great horned owl a couple months ago in the dark in our drive and I made it drop its mouse... So it ate one of our birds., sat outside my bedroom window hooting angrily after I almost hit it though... Gotta say they're tough. If you put a sensor light on the coop might scare it off or a sensor light with a noise thing hooked to it... We have door alarms that can be tripped if you hooked it up right you could alarm every predator that came close and every deer may work

sorry you lost a bird ...

It was indeed the layer roos that I am going to eat - they are penned outside a coop with just bird netting over them and kennel sections for the sides ....

Bird netting doesn't keep owl talons out ! ha ha (I never expected it would)

I am way too busy to spend hours on processing my roos today - my job could be in jeopardy if I don't meet deadlines - but I may have to process them all today as the only solution I can think of other than splattering the owl into the afterlife. (357 w/hollow points, anyone?)

The hungry thing is now very bold, waiting to fly until I am only feet from it .....

I tried to get a nice pic of it peeking up from killed roo #3 last night - but just got a blurry mix on a black background.

I would try a motion detector light, music is good - although there have been studies that show chickens don't 'enjoy' heavy rock (!) it upsets them and they lay slightly less, hang up streamers, pie pans etc. anything to distract/annoy the owl, good luck

Oh dear, Metella, do you have a dog crate or something you can put them in untill you can deal with them? It is a shame to let an owl have your Sunday dinners that you have been nurturing for months.

Glasshen ! I know, right?

I've got lots of good food in them boys - waiting to get it in me ... just yesterday I gave them tons of Kale and grapes.

Now I've got a really healthy owl flying around. ha ha

I'm only in good spirits because the thing is gorgeous ! But it made over a dozen trips to the pen area last night - culminating in one dead roo and a very tired me.

Yeah, I think I can dump a ton of sawdust in a kennel and shove them all in for a day or two ... that won't be great -but they get along and then they can a few peaceful nights before I process them.
