NY chicken lover!!!!

Made it thru the heat! Stuff sure does take a long time when you have to keep stopping to rest! I only lost one newborn bun today, I was sure it was alive when I checked them earlier in the day. Probably got too hot in all that fur the does pull. One other one went MIA, I kept putting it back in the box, I had rescued it outside the cage yesterday and today it was just gone gone. Guess it had a death wish?

Everyone else looked fine, I opened the Ameraucana pen so they could get out of the hot coop and into the shade, yes, the same chickens that delight in escaping from said pen. Would they get OUT of the pen? Noooooo, of course not. One of the kinda runty looking hens does look rough though, seems awfully affected by the heat, its either standing outside trying to give itself heat stroke or maybe its got mites, I guess tomorrows fun project is to chase it down and check.

The mink decided that since it could not get at the ducks, it would kill one of the silkie hens instead.

I guess I can add fix coop *again* to my list of stuff to do? I can't seem to catch the dang thing, going to have to go PU a new trap and decide who wants to be bait.... Unless of course its the rat I also cannot catch, anyone thing that rats would attack and kill half grown ducklings and a silkie? The bite radius on the two ducks that got attacked was about two inches tho, whatever it was it got the whole ducks head in its mouth and left a fairly large wound on a leg of another.

Looks like the Runner drake still has one eye, pretty sure the other one is gone.

Jury is still out on the leg wound on the Khaki hen though, she is standing sometimes, so I've decided to give her another week to see if she continues to improve.

Sachasmom: There was a thread on the site that delt entirely with mink. There was a trap made with a long PCV pipe. Apparently the mink can't resist going a long and narrow pipe. Inside the pipe they either put a trap or some poisen - can't remember which. Was going to look up the thread again if we got more mink here. I shot the one that got in my coop.

Everyone else: There is no help on the forum for my two questions.

1. Chick that arrived in the mail unable to walk. She can sit with her legs folded under her, but falls over when she tries to move. When she stands up she gets very stiff and tends to fall forward onto her beak. If you prop her up in front, she will stay there for a while, then her legs get tired and she collapses onto her side. She is being hand fed right now as I can't put anthing in with her. Cull?

My other question is on my 3 month old Orpington: Is it possible that she is a SQ bird?

Hope you guys can help. I've been frustrated with the rest of the forum.

Happy==not sure about anything you asked but I have to tell you, your orpington is one of the most beautiful birds I have seen. She has beautiful coloring and just a nice, overall balance and look. If she isnt sq, I dont know what is.

Had some nasty storm come through with large hail last night. Sounded like it was trying to come through the roof. Another brutal day today. My poor silkies were panting pretty hard yesterday according to dd. Will have to put out a shallow pan of water for them to bath in. Big girls did okay, even Betty, who doesnt do heat well. Cant wait for this heat to break. More storms this pm. Almost forgot, Mumbles was a jerk to my daughter when she was calling the silkies over to check on them. She had to send him flying across the pen a few times cause he came at her. How long does this jerk stage last???? I hope my blue silkie boys arent jerks.

Still growing out the kids to be sure who is a boy and girl. 3 blue boys, 1 or 2 partridge and maybe a black. I will have to find homes for them at some point. I am trying to hang on to them as long as possible to see how they fill out. Have to start another coop but all work makes it difficult.

Stay cool everyone and hopefully no one loses any cheeps to the heat.

I know that some have had luck with a chick chair or putting the chick in a small cup. Trying to get out of the cup allows them to strengthen their legs. I've seen some really cute ones where they tape bottlecaps with food and water on the edge of the cup and they can eat that way. Maybe try that for a day or so? I'm a big ol softie and I usually try things to help them unless they are unable to eat and drink - but if no improvement in a few days I'd have to cull.

ETA: Just looked at your pics.. possible that you have a slipped tendon?

I can't comment on the show quality thing, as I don't show birds. But my guess is that the show people will tell you to ask again when she's older. pretty birdie!

Sorry I would suggest to cull the chick. Every chick that we have hatched that had legs problem like that to be culled. It can't really live a good life like that and it is better to end it now than when it older and you get attached.
Don't know about showing, but I think at 3 months it is probley too early to tell.

Madseneccord: Thank you so much

I appreciate your feedback. We shall see how she grows, but looking into showing now.

Featherz: Thank you for your input. You have given me the most info so far on the poor little chickie. We have had her in a paper towel "teacup" since we got her. From what I have read on slipped tendons, she doesn't have them. No swelling of the hocks and she can bend her legs. Wish it was slipped tendon, the outlook would probably be better. She seems neurological, the more I look at her. Too bad, 'cause she does have spirit!

Admhotel: Yes, you are probably right on the chick. If no improvement today, we will have to cull her. It's hard when they eat, drink and chirp. This is no life for a chick, however. Thank you.

I assume you've tried the poly-vi-sol? is this is a silkie? I had to give one of my silkies vitamin E for a neuro problem when it was born, and it seemed to work. I tend to let the spirited ones have a bit of a chance, but I too would cull if no improvement in a day or so. I've only had to cull one chick - that one was barely peeping, could not walk and would not eat. No improvement past the 3 day 'yolk' time so the poor thing was put out of his/her misery (sniff).

Does anybody have info on the auction in bridgeport, I am hopeing that it is this weekend because I don't have to work.

I am expecting my first hatch on Wednesday. I need to read about lockdown again. Any advice? I have a brinsia 20 advanced. I have candled a few times. I really want to do it ALL the time but I need to get other things done! I have not removed the "clears". I was hoping that they would miraculously become viable and develop:D ! What does everybody feed their hatchlings? eeewww! i am getting anxious. All eggs are buckeyes! I purchased 16(12 are developing) and 5 of my own(only one developing). Sheesh, I think I need a little hand holding.....

I put the quick start (Murray McMurray chick) in her water with some sugar. Then made a gruel out of chick start feed and the quick start sugar water. Still feeding her this combo every 2 hours (every 4 at night). We have been working with her since she came on Monday. This decision would be easier if she was more debilitated. Seems her only problem is she has no balance or coordination.
She is a Red Star chick. Cute, isn't she? Trying to work up to culling her since no improvement since Tuesday.

Unless we can think of something else to try...
