NY chicken lover!!!!

I created a Facebook group for people in the North East. If you are on Facebook and want to join its: Northeast poultry & waterfowl group. Its purpose is the have a place where we can find breeders that are possibly closer for buying & selling, or just friendly talk. So many times we see ads for things & they are across the US. Finding others closer should help with our searches and possible find some more friends along the way.

Lord have mercy, I have enough to do with BYC, I can't follow Facebook too.

How Do your chickens like Nuttys Feed ?
I love the smell it smells NUTTY to me ..Mine didnt even bawk at the new change ..
mine are laying 12- 14 eggs a day ..
I am collecting them to take to Nutty on Sat ...with some chicks from rancher too ..
Anyone have donations ?

The chickens love it, and so do the pigs. They got into it and ate half a bag before I noticed :/ My girls have picked back up laying. We went from 0-1 a day to 5-7 since we have switched!

It was nice and warm today! I had been unable to clean the frozen poops off the poop board for a looong time since they were too frozen. So today was the start. I have removed 11 gallons of fecal material, and not all was thawed enough...what a day it has been. I found myself getting a bit testy with those two crowing in my ears and my hair covering my eyes, the hens were helping...oh yes.

I was just saying to DW that I usually get to do a cleaning once during the winter but things are frozen solid. I made a trip to JJ's for Diatomaceous Earth for the job.

The girls are laying pretty good so far. Except for a couple on new girls who should be laying anytime. Even the new Frizzle girl has laid at least one egg and her comb isn't even red.

Haha! I'm going to dig into the mountain of poop tomorrow - not sure where I'm going to put it since the compost is under 3ft snow. If I leave it lying around the dogs will eat it

I'm having problems finding the page. I typed in exactly what you wrote - nothing is showing up???

My cemani rooster arrived! He's another breeder's breeder roo that was usurped by his own offspring and retired. He is stunning. He has some mulberry in his wattles (which the camera really brings out :( but it isn't as bad in person), so when I get a cockerel out of him with black wattles I will be retiring him as my breeder as well. My hens all have perfect black combs and wattles so they should make some really nice offspring together. He's certainly got some spunk! Here he is announcing his ownership of the workshop:

The pictures don't do him justice. All his feathers have a beetle green and purple sheen and he's just stunning in person. I'm really happy with him.

In other news, while I was picking him up (from the wrong post office, of course  ) Tractor Supply had a shipment of chicks there. That no one was bothering to pick up. I was going there after I grabbed my rooster so I was so tempted to say just let me take them, but I'm sure they wouldn't have gone for it. So when I went to Tractor Supply, from which I was hoping to buy chicks but of course couldn't since they were all just sitting at the post office, I made sure to remark to several of the people they were there. No one cared enough to go get them, they just kept stocking the stuff that was arriving from the truck. Because I guess getting that stuff settled is more important than picking up and settling in 100 living baby chicks who can't produce their own heat and haven't had food and water for days. I'm pretty disappointed with them about this.

Anyone interested in a Narragansett Tom? He's been fighting w another tom who is in w him (d/t spring perhaps) & so now it's time for him to go. If you want a girlfriend for him we have a Narragansett hen that can go w him. They're nice looking birds. They were hatched late summer 2013. Asking $30 on the tom & $40 for the hen but will consider any reasonable offer if it includes a good home. Birds are in the Ithaca area. Pm me if ur interested.

Also, someone in cortland has an ad on CL for a blind peacock they are trying to rehome. He's gorgeous, if anyone has always wanted a peacock & has room...
Too bad I don't have my Turkey coop built yet! If I has a place to put them I would think about it, but I'm not ready yet.

That peackock is really tempting and I could totally accommodate him but Cortland is 4 hours from me, darn it.
I live about 25 minutes form Cortland if you really want it maybe I could help you out.

Count me in! I'll see if I can find it.

There's no room in the coop for a crate, and I don't put water in there, except for a few times when I kept them inside all day.
Right now I have 9 ducks, and when I moved them here it took two of those large crates.
The ducks prefer being outside, anyways, so they just turn the snow into ice near the water bowl.

When I had the covered yard at the other place, I'd put the young ducklings in a plastic crate at night, but only for a few weeks.
I'd add hay to that crate almost every other day & have to clean it out frequently, as it did get very thick and wet in there.
I have yet to figure out what I'm going to do with them this year when they start laying eggs, but I have awhile, as they usually wait until it warms up.
I have 10 ducks. When I first started I had them in a crate in my main coop till I built them a little house (the duck hut)..Then when I got more, we ended up building/renovating a coop for them. I have the big rubber tubs for them and they love it. I don't know where they water gets dirty either..The all seem to take a dip in the tub at some point in the day. Some stay in longer then others. My one crested Drake Lottie seems to really like to take his time in there. I tell him that he is in his bubble bath. I can't begin to tell you what the inside of their coop looks like. I just keep adding shavings to it and it is very deep and frozen solid. I don't know when it is going to thaw enough to even be able to chip some of it out. It is funny though that you can see where they are sleeping at this point. There are little "nests" were you can see they are sleeping.

That is my biggest problem. I REALLY need to clean out the duck coop and even if I could, I have no where to put it. My dogs have their own run and I could only be so lucky if the neighbors dog came down and ate it. (then went home and got sick, maybe they would learn to stay home). We have so much snow. I did manage to clean some of it out I think that it was in December. I didn't have any place to put it then so I just put in in the snow. I know that it will be a mess when the snow melts, but I hated seeing the coop that way. Now I cringe every day when I look in there. I just keep adding shavings. It has got to be at least 2 feet deep in there now.

I need some help deciding what to do with my rooster who had frostbite. His legs seem to be fine, part of one foot is turning black but the rest of the foot is good and his other foot hasn't turned black so he might keep the whole thing. His legs are warm to the touch indicating good blow flow which would mean they weren't damaged, which is good, but here's the problem. He won't stand.

Now, before he was standing just fine, and eating like a pig. Now, he won't stand, and I took him out of his tub and put him on the floor to see if I could get him to walk and he didn't stand up, he kind of tried to then seemed to lose his balance and put a wing out to steady himself but didn't get up. He's also not eating much at all, and he should be wolfing it down since he was underweight when I brought him in. He's still alert, fusses a little when I pick him up, but just not eating or standing. I don't know why, perhaps he's in pain and I should still be giving him aspirin? I can try and see if that would help. Otherwise, I am at a loss, and if he stops eating I might have to cull him because I don't want him to starve to death.
