NY chicken lover!!!!

Pickled eggs, yum. I was just at a wedding shower where the grandmother of the bride brought her famous pickled eggs, they were purple, beets were involved, and oil of cinnamon and clove. How strange that pickled eggs are suddenly on my radar.

Glad the chickies are pretty good. It is possible that the little one is just too fragile, in which case it wouldn't be able to make it in flock life. You are certainly giving her every chance!

It sounds like it may have internal problems ...
you could try chick saver ( electrolyte powder) into the water , Or apple cider vinegar , or liguid vitamins no iron .
I dont think a antibiotic would help

When the brooder was full of all 17, I think she just was too timid compared to the aggressive PRocks to eat. She just doesn't seem to be catching up, but hasn't given up yet so I'll keep holding on. Resumed adding the LifeLytes (MannaPro) to the water, see if that gives her a boost. This morning seems a little better, as long as I keep the heat lamp on. The bigger EE/BO sprawls out in the brooder, sunning herself under the heat. If I shut the lamp off, the big one is happy but the little one then tucks herself under the bigger one's wing.

We've done a couple. What would you like to know?

How hard is it? Did you replace with vinyl or aluminum? How do you measure the old door? Have you ever repaired a wooden door?

So I've got 6 Sebbie goose eggs developing in the hovabator my friend gave me to incubate these eggs. She's got one out of three that pipped today and is on it's way to hatching. I'm so excited for her. This is her first attempt at hatching goose eggs and so far she's been successful. I love baby geese! Not sure if I want any yet tho. She offered me two for doing this hatch for her but I have a feeling I'll be sending them all home with her. Not sure I'm ready to tackle geese yet. I want to worry about adding ducks first when we move and then goats.

Does anyone add Calf-Manna to their chicken feed? I have 4 silkie hens who are just downright terrible layers. I barely got any eggs from them when we moved here, I'm assuming because of the stress of the move and being in new environments, etc. but these two I've had since 2013 have barely given me any eggs at all. One silkie hen was laying for me end of November into January and is now broody, so of course she stopped already. But not a single egg from the other three that I want to lay. These are all under 3 too, maybe going on 3 if anything. I saw someone mention this Calf-Manna to help boost protein and egg laying so I figured it can't hurt to try. But if they don't give me anything this summer I may end up parting with them because they are not helping me get where I want to be with my Silkie project.

What's your protein level? I was disappointed in my hens so I switched to Agway Egg Producer pellets. 21% , and they picked up. Silkies are not prolific layers are they? I've read most folks keep them for broody moms. I'd certainly consider it if I had a place for three.

Of course you do know they'd know I don't like Silkies and wouldn't go broody for me. Even if I wore my tin foil hat they'd find out some how what I think of them.

Anyhow, make a check list of what could be the problem and go from there.

They all survived! I watched the NYSEG outage map, was out at least 2 hours.
Rancher - you need electricity to make warm water, for both the well pump and water heater. Otherwise, good idea.
Lynzi- we've still been getting single digits here, one morning was zero. So heat lamp has been on constantly. I'm ready for warmer temps.
Garage chicks are in a very large brooder we built in the corner of the garage. 6'x8'x3' high. Covered with plywood and wire, which is currently covered by towels and cardboard to hold the heat in. Heat lamp is hanging inside, secured by 2 different points. Chicks stay pretty close to the light still, since it is so cold. There is 15 out there.
In the house I still have 2. The small one is looking sickly tonight after its cool down today. They all hatched at the same time, but this one BO fell behind. The BO/EE is kind to it so remained in the house for companionship. It hasn't been thriving, but now worried about it. Ideas?
Not if you have a gas hot water heater or gas stove. You could also heat it on a wood stove. We have a gas hot water heater so we're good to go.

I've had two runts in my time.

A Dominique from hatchery. My first batch. She was fine, laid eggs and everything.

And a white BO from Jody. She too was fine but later bit the dust.

It could be genetic.

I've had chicks that did not thrive. Some I could tell they'd never make it. Seemed okay but had skinny legs and feet. Usually ones I've helped out.

Our hatch didn't go as well as I would've liked last weekend. 12 chicks hatched 2 of those died the second day. Some of the pipped ones died before making it out and some just didn't hatch at all. We had fertility 30 of 50 made it to lock down. I collected the eggs when it was still way below zero for this hatch and I think that was the problem. We're setting another hatch this weekend. The first hatch 2 NN,1 BLRW, 3 brahma bantam, and 4 OE/EE. Going to set Del/cornish, lav orp, OE/NN, BLRW, and golden cuckoo maran. Hopefully will have better results now that it has been warmer.

Travis has killed 2 opossum the past couple weeks in our barn. Rats we have a problem with every fall when it gets cold. Now we have barn cats and that helps.

The stomach flu has gone through our house the past 2 weeks and hasn't been fun. It bothers me to see my babies look and feel like they did. The aches and pains hung on for days. I'm glad vacation is this week starting.

Rancher--I've been thinking of you and your wife. I wish she didn't have to be going through this.
