NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all. Dh came home to find two escapees in the basement. He returned them to prison and reinforced the possible escape route with cardboard and duct tape. Built them a chick size roost as well. I swear the little monsters spend all day plotting escape from the brooder.

I'm still waiting for my silkie pullets to lay. These silkie girls drive me crazy. I think they know I want eggs to hatch and they are holding out on me!!!! Einstein, my black silkie roo, busts out the door every morning and dances for me around my arm reaching into his run. He is just too much! Love that guy!

Off to the pharm. Have a good day everyone!

Hello, I was wondering if you have good luck with the wilkes here in NY. I have read conflicting opinions about their ability to thrive in NY weather. I am falling for these little Roos and hens. :) that you and happy farming.

My silkies did just fine this past winter, despite the bitter cold and snow. I dont heat their coops. I do put olastic on their runs to block the wind. They went out every day. They are tough little birds.

silkie question....anyone else have issues with their silkies head poof? mine looks horrible! its poofy at the tippy top of the feathers but the feathers closer to her head are horrible looking. they look like pin feathers and not puffy at all. she looks like crap!!! i want a nice big poof and it definitely doesn't look like it!

I have hatchery silkies that are 3 years old now; 1 rooster and 4 hens. They go out with the regular flock, even this winter when it was bitter cold. I help all my poultry by putting some hay down over the snow and ice so their feet don't get so frozen. I made a community nest box in the coop that is 4-foot by 16-inches and the silkies confiscated it as a sleeping box/retreat from the larger chickens and ducks. I think their little coop within a coop helped them stay comfortable in the colder weather as it held in their body heat and got them up off the floor about 6-inches so they were out of any drafts along the floor. They tended to hang out between the coops or on the side protected from the brutal winds when they went out and did very well.

Is she molting? Pin feathers indicate molting. Also check for mites on her head. They can cause the feathers to look like crap as well.
