NY chicken lover!!!!

Number 20 just hatched. Day 22. Two blue eggs remain with no visible pips yet. We are having everyone over for Easter this afternoon. I will candle them later to look for internal pips or movement. The chicks have become very active in the brooder today. One of the brahmas just ran across the brooder, jumped into the air and landed on top of a huddle of chicks.

Happy Easter everyone! Been a while since I checked in. After the last snow storm we had a power outage and I had two full bator going. Dh ran the gene to warm up the house and the bators. All but 1 of my large fowl made it to lock down but only 5 silkie eggs made it. THe silkie quit. I lost all 24 eggs. All but 4 large fowl hatched. I have 32 bouncing fluffballs! Lots of rir and a few sexlinks. Little monsters are a week old today and are trying to break out of prison already! It's nice to have babies again. Not a good start to silkie hatching though.

Got my plants already from gurneys. I just need it to warm up. Have to get dirt this week and put them in the growbags.

Be well everyone.

Sorry for your loss

. I think you are probably beating up on yourself too much. Unfortunately chickens die for no apparent reasons despite all our care and attentions - that's just the way it is. I hope you do find a good avian vet so that you can get a positive answer. W have a vet around here that tends to birds etc. but not specialized - she's good tho' - I have used her.

We do loose them .... sometimes it is genetics, sometimes something they ate, sometimes the whole flock is exposed to a virus and does fine except for one with a weaker immune system ....it may have been egg impacted and given you any signs.

I'm not really sure a necropsy would do any good except for finding egg impaction ... and you can do that with a quick look.

What I would do is keep an eye on all the rest - put some ACV (apple cider vinegar) in the water -make sure everyone is feed well - maybe make sure you toss in some varied veggies for minerals and fiber .... and that is all unless I see signs of others being sick - then post again and others on here have some great info on medications and treatments.

I am sorry for your loss, too. And we do care about our birds a great deal and want them all to be healthy. Sometimes they die. If you were doing something wrong, I think you would be seeing multiple deaths, so look at all the healthy ones you have and tell yourself that you are doing a fine job with them. I had one die overnight one Easter, also. Think it was two years ago. A SS named Lady. With chickens, things just happen.

Today my flock had an Easter Egg Chase. One of the BRs came out of the coop with an egg stuck on her beak, and ran around with it so everyone would follow her. We were thinking maybe we just need all new hens, group egg eating is a bit much.

Happy Easter! I have one hen that has been kind enough to provide me with pre-colored eggs this year. Gotta love those Easter Eggers.
