NY chicken lover!!!!

thanks everyone for the kind words ..i think i was still in shock and my reaction a little to do with it just happening ..i no things can go bad fast and was thinking i wasn't done dealing with this yet ..i will be burying her today ..i am looking for a place on my property to bury her ..seems most of the ground is still frozen..i feel terrible that i didnt do more the night i seen she had the runny nose ..i have delt with a runny nose before and thought it would be fine by morning ..

none of my other birds are showing any signs of being under the weather ..i checked each bird last night for runny noses ..all their eyes and actions say they are fine ..but you never no i guess ..

still would like to know of a vet that will see chickens and have a number on hand....it seems it was someone on here that new of a vet that they used around this part of the state[ chautauqua co.] for their birds..

i just started them all on feather fixer feed and i thought maybe it was that ,that may have something to do with it ..i no my birds all about stopped laying from this ..i was getting 15 or so eggs a day and yesterday i got 5 ..i am changing out all the bedding and cleaning the coop out today ..time for some spring cleaning..nothing settles the mind and heart then some good old hard work ..not sure how i'll get a hole dug out deep enough..but i better get on it ..thanks again

Sorry for your loss. I lost a hen this winter for no apparent reason.

Its been awhile since checking in here too. We have limited internet usage and always seem to run out before the month ends. =/ Being out in the boonies sometimes sucks.

We have 36 eggs set in the incubator for our local 4H group. Candling them today~!!

I started a bunch of seeds too for our garden. I have to get the raised beds built now that the snow is almost gone where I want to put them. Have to see if my DH can help me build them.

Welcome Pharkas,

are you in the city. Someone said they couldn't have chickens in the city and I said well I delivered mail in the city and I know folks have chickens in the city czu I heard the rooster crowing.

No, I am in south Onondaga close to Marcellus. Syracuse address, but very rural/agricultural area. We have horses, chickens, farm cats and dog. Where are you?

I candled the last 2 eggs last night and I could see no movement at all. I'm leaving in the bator for one more day. So final count: I started with full bator (24 eggs). All eggs were collected over 7 days with outside temps only in the teens. Some eggs were warm and others were quite cold at time of retrieval. I have one rooster with 12 hens. Rooster is a 1 year old EE. I chose eggs from our EE, Dark Brahma, Australorp, and a few from either a Red Star or Amber link and one from a Tetra Tint. With the cold temps and the low rooster to hen ratio I wasn't sure I was going to get anything. An impulsive Day 3 candling showed nothing and I was devastated. Day 7 candling however showed 1 yoker (infertile) and 23 vascular eggs! Day 14 candling showed 1 blood ring. I locked down 22 eggs the evening of the 18th Day. One Australorp born on the 19th Day. 17 chicks born on Day 20. 1 chick born on Day 21 and 1 chick born on Day 22. 20 out of 22 from lockdown. I ended up with larger air cells than textbook since the ambient air here was very dry and for most of the 1st 18 days I only had water in one trough as per the directions on the Brinsea Oct 20. Day 16 maybe, I filled both troughs up and could only achieve about 30 % RH. Day 18 I put a shammy and 4 sponges in the bottom of the Brinsea and the RH shot up and stayed at 70+ % throughout lockdown. With this small amount of experience and with the awsome BYC community in my tool belt I think I am ready to try some Ebay eggs. I would love to hatch some black/blue Ameraucanas and French Black Copper Marans. With our crazy fluctuating temps am I better off waiting till late May or early June to mailorder eggs? I also want to find a few local fertile white leghorn eggs since I don't have any pure white eggs coming in from the coop. My kids used crayons to decorate our already rainbow colored eggs yesterday!

Congrats on your successful hatch of your own eggs!!! I think if you have a nice space for incubation should be a good time to hatch. Brinsea is great!!! As easy as you can get. Good luck!

I use sponges I found at the $1 store they are about an 1/8 of an inch thick when dry. They came in 8 x 10 pieces. I cut them into strips about 2" wide by the 10" length. Lay one in the water channel 2" side down in and slightly curled up the side of the trough. The long end will lay up under your egg tray. Keep water in that trough and the sponge will soak it up and ta daaaaa your humidity problem is fixed.

I couldn't find the spongy sheets this year, so I took paper towels and folded them so it was nice & thick and did the same thing. Only problem is the paper towels dry out faster than the spongey thing.

When its time to increase the humidity for hatching just fill the 2nd trough an add more paper towels !

oh man...i need to get back on here and start posting again!!! i miss living near people or at least talking to people near by that have chickens!!!
