NY chicken lover!!!!

Usually each city ... (or county) has their own rules/ laws about livestock and chickens - so your best bet is to look up the zoning bylaws in your area .... and don't fuss - they were written by people and can easily be amending for changing times !!!

Each level of government can make more strict laws regarding chickens. For instance we called all the local TSC yesterday to see what chicks they had in stock. The Oswego store said they don't sell chicks because there is a local ordnance outlawing the sale of less then 25 chicks at a time. 10 miles away the TSC in Fulton sells chicks and is only limited by NY's 6 bird minimum. You can own chickens in the city of Oswego, but if you want less than 25 you need to smuggle them in :)

My oldest chick from this hatch will be a week old tomorrow. We have been using chicken nipples mounted in pvc pipe in the brooder. It has worked very well. We have chicken nipples in the coop for the adult birds and it is the number one thing I can recommend to anyone with poultry. If you don't enjoy changing poopy water everyday you will love them. I was nervous trying them with the newly hatched chicks but they caught on very quick. Once the 1st curious chick started to pick at the nipples all the others came over to see what was so exciting.

I just want to put it out there that I have 2 pairs of Sulmtalers. I have them listed on Craigslist and am going to post on the chickenstock thread. They are around 9 weeks old and are directly from Greenfire farms. They are the gold wheaten variety. I was hoping for silver wheaten when I got them. If you are thinking of a heritage dual purpose breed know for its meat I would urge you to look into this breed. There is also a really nice thread dedicated to them on this site. They are $60 a pair for this month and will be $70 in May.
