He has given up the idea of using the right side as a shed at this point. "It's going to be for the goats when we get them, isn't it?" Why, yes, yes it is.

Oh, and
welcome-byc.gif
to Silkies Mom!

I have a question for fellow silkie owners. I have 4 and 5 month old silkies. Should I keep them on chick feed or can I start them on grower/finisher? I am almost through my current bag of feed so I need to know asap before I buy another bag. Oh--how old are they before they start to lay? I am familiar with large fowl but silkies are new to me. Thanks!

I am pretty sure the bag of grower/finisher says for older than 10 weeks.

As far as laying? Whenever they feel like doing so. I have yet to find a chicken that can read one of our calendars.

Finish up what you have and start the growe/ layer. I did this past week myself.:<) My silkies always layed early....round 5 months or so ......so it worked for me.

That fox comes near my flock, I'll shoot it myself!

Toying with the idea of getting some nice Dels to breed myself. Or maybe some bantam Brown Leghorns.

I hadn't seen this and trylin mentioned it today. That you were slamming me. If you want these leghorns I've posted them on CL so I guess you didn't really want them. The hen has white legs and of the two chicks the roo has a single comb. She hasn't laid an egg since she hatched the chicks. Which is why I've been trying to hatch every egg she's laid. Lord only knows what that guy pawned off at the conference.

As for the Dels? Knock yourself out. They are harder than orps in that you've got pattern and type to deal with. I might have three hens to breed with out of all the ones I've hatched out. None of the roos was any good and they are in the freezer. I will say they averaged 5#'s dressed. I don't know if that's good or bad. I will be hatching and saving and culling next spring if I'm still alive and living here.

Now because I am your friend, I remembered your son wanted pigeons and I was at my brother who used to have them and his friend was there and he still has them so I'll pm his name and address. If he doesn't have what your son wants I've no doubt he can hook you up.

Now for the passed two nights the rabbits have been out. One of which has been playing tag with the chickens. It was funny to see the chickens chasing "Peter" around the yard. I do hope the foxes stay away.
