the running joke in Albany is as follows. Yes the board passed the ordinace for up to 6 hens in the city of Albany Ny. BUT Mayor Jerry Jennings didn't want to offend Albany's rodent and Ferrel cat population, so he vetoe'd the chicken bill.

I think they are afraid of being out squawked.

Mayor Jennings vetoed it , said there weren't enough specific measures spelled out for policing, and other guidlines. If you try to conceal hens in your backyard, make sure they cannot escape as if they do there are stiff fines for having them. If you want a chuckle, i raised a slate blue tom turkey to about 20 lbs in my appartment in clifton park last year. F inally had to part with him because of a paranoid roommate. Right now I have someone taking care of my 16 young Brahmas up in the adirondacks at my home while i live and work in capitol district. I suggest that you try to read the articles about the bill that was vetoed and see if you can hookup with the involved parties and try to help get it passed... Good Luck

Certainly a variance is good, but so is changing the zoning and ordinances if you can. I know it's not easy but someone has to lead the charge and unfortunately it's you.

I wish you the best,

rancher

Is it going to cost you $300 a year? Or is the variance good forever? Good luck!

One time fee of $300. If it were per year I would be having some great chicken dinners HAHA! But even that is outrageous. They call it the application fee but in reality it is a bs fee. I wish I had the money to get a lawyer and fight it since at one time this was farm land but even if I had the money and started that process the minute a lawyer called the village they would want the chickens gone. It really sucks to because NO one has complained about them so they obviously aren't a nuisance and even if they tried to tell me they were loud (although I have no roosters) the trains that run 24/7 blaring their horns at 2 am are a lot louder than any chicken.
