NY chicken lover!!!!

Oh, I just looked it up on facebook. I guess it WAS passed, but apparently it was vetoed? boo!

I'm in saratoga county and am rural/ag, so I am ok, but I work in albany so I want them to have chickens too.

Someone told me that it was vetoed in Albany because there was a worry about abuses in "ethnic" nieghborhoods. Like adding goats and other livestock; slippery slope kind of thing. Too bad so many people think eating anything you don't buy at the grocery store is unhealthy for you.

Albany city council was considering, but the mayor vetoed it. Now that I have a vested interest, I am going to try to get my hands on the exact ordinances, etc. - I'm somewhat torn between quietly keeping a few ladies in my yard (free range and fenced off and somewhat private area) and getting more vocally involved. I started reading on this site about well-worded ordinances and those that are too specific, so maybe when it's cold and the ladies are quietly tucked away in their rabbit hutch, I'll be more inclined to venture in those waters (and the chicken police are less inclined to wander out in freezing temperatures). I look forward to hearing about others in the area who are more informed and educated on the topic. I'd hope there are some additional grass-roots efforts to make this a more chicken-friendly city.

the running joke in Albany is as follows. Yes the board passed the ordinace for up to 6 hens in the city of Albany Ny. BUT Mayor Jerry Jennings didn't want to offend Albany's rodent and Ferrel cat population, so he vetoe'd the chicken bill.

I don't see how state legislators would be threatened by chickens?

Good point, I won't take my chickens into the bar at Albany Country Club where Jerry's warming a stool....smirk - I was thinking about some of the feral legislators....

I have a feeling my ladies are are going to be a fun adventure this year!

I can just see one of those team building events at work where you have to disclose some personal detail nobody knows and they have to guess who.

I'll defer on the side of caution, I think.
