NY chicken lover!!!!

Featherz, so sorry about Gomez

Well now I've waffled again and decided I'm going to keep Pretty Boy. He's behaving so well, even with the hens, which I have never seen with a young cockerel before. He gives them food, dances for them, and keeps an eye out for danger. The hens seem to like him and I saw him mate with a hen for the first time today and he was quick - on and off - so he's easy on the girls that way too. So now I have to pick someone else to find a home for, lol. I'm thinking my naked neck frizzle cockerel since I will have frizzle hens once Green's chicks grow up and two frizzles should never mate.

So, Featherz, if you want a nice naked neck olive egger cockerel, I've got one you could have

I will let you know! I want to see if any of Gomez's babies turn out to be boys (so far they all look girly).. but I want a NN boy for sure - I want more NN babies!

So - Guineas were a bust for me .... way to loud ALL THE TIME .... they did watch good - but then they got mean with the chickens when I lost my head roo.

SO - I'm game to try geese now - maybe .... Can they and will they roost and move with the chickens - not challenge me (I can't spend a lot time - a few trips a day - so they aren't pets) but alert for danger .... are they a target for hawks since they are white ?   They won't honk all day will they?  Just when they alert ?

Can I get Roman Tuft in some colors ?  I know SOP is white - but I'd be glad to get culls or a different line that had colors in them.

Well, you know that I like geese and you've met Lacie, who is a roman tufted, and the breed is very docile and small for geese, but still bigger than anything else I've had. She's white, but a hawk couldn't possibly carry her off and I don't think they'd even try. Plus I know she'd attack back if it tried and it'd probably give up quite quickly - geese have serrated beaks, ouch! Mine are coop trained, and they did it on their own - they like to sleep in a nice safe enclosed space with the other birds so they go in at night. And baby goslings I've found to be less messy than ducklings. Male geese can be aggressive when defending the female's nest site, so you may want to stick with just females. They don't honk all day. They have softer, quieter sounds they use to communicate and mine only honks if she sees me to say hello or if she seems something she doesn't like, like a hawk or a neighborhood dog.

Roman tufteds only come in white. You could try sebastopols, which are even more docile than roman tufteds, a little bigger, and come in colors, but only private breeders have colors right now so you'd have to do eggs and hatch them. American buff geese are also supposed to be docile, and I've had one before and she was a sweetheart. They are much bigger than a roman tufted, though. And geese are seasonal layers, so if you want goslings this year, you'll have to decide quickly because most geese are done laying already.

Not this year !

WAY WAY too much to be done on other coop before adding that

I am only interested in Roman Tufted - so don't know why there was speculation otherwise .... I already did my prelim research before I posted - but real experience from peeps here is always best !!!

Just wondering about keeping them - Lacie seemed fine as an only goose - what is your thought on that ? I figure I should get 2 ? If I get them a goslings without hatching them - will they imprint on me ? I really only want 1 - but we all know how math goes. I know you wanted a gander for her - but you wanted to give her mate - I am not interested in that at all. Just an extra watchdog and physical deterrent to anyone who may wonder onto the property.

I can only have one spot for all my fowl to stay - will the goose be ok "cooped" up for those stretches in the winter when I keep the coop closed?

I like Lacie's size ... don't recall her noise - so I guess that is a good sign.

Lacie wasn't hatched by me and still imprinted :) She does okay on her own, but I think that's because she has the ducks to hang out with when she wants. I think she'd be lonely with just chickens, and I do think she'll like having another goose. They have ways of communicating that no other type of bird I have does, such as with body language, and I think she'll be happy to have another bird that really understands her language. She was supposed to have a mate from the get go, but he died in transit :( I'd get two females and they'll be happy to have each other, and they'll still imprint on you if you spend enough time with them when they first arrive.

Morning all. Got rain but not too heavy. Dh was able to pick me a flat of strawberries yesterday along with a quart of sugar peas before the rain came. Last of the strawberries for the season. Next will be blackberries.

Cheeps are not happy about the rain. Found a silkie egg outside of the coop yesterday. Appeared to have been kicked out by one of the hens. I shook it a little and it didn't sound right so I tossed it. They are still sitting on 3. Chicks are doing well with all the mommies. I may try to move out the older ones this week into the other coop. Just have to rig up a barrier so splash and little big man can look but not touch. Always something going on.

Hearing more kazoo from the monsters coop. Boys are getting hormonal now. 12 weeks old today. I figure 2 more weeks before I can consider processing. Some of them are quite big.

Off to work this pm. Hoping it's quiet. All the mean people were in yesterday.

Still busy busy busy. I hope I get a calm weekend sometime this summer. Our barn cats I think have been picking off our ducklings one by one. I've only caught glimpses of them in the vicinity and not in the act. The only thing different from last year when the whole hatch survived is the cats.

Our hatches this year haven't been good. I'm going to order a few new thermometers being that we can't find our good one. I think that may have been part of the problem.

New to chickens in Herkimer County, NY. I have 7 11-week old chicks and 4 2-week old chicks, all barnyard mixes. I have to separate the cockerels soon from the older batch. I'm moving 3 of the 4 cockerels to a separate pen. The rain is preventing the construction of the other coop. This has been a wonderful experience for my kids so far, but we haven't gotten to the egg-laying or processing part.

I do hope these cats are fixed? If not contact the CNYcat coalition for help. They do great work.

Planted the berry plants you sent. Thanks so much. Haven't seen any new growth yet but soon I expect.
