So, I've been trying to spend more time with/imprint stronger on young chicks so that they're calmer as adults. Seems the cemanis r real skittish. So far seems to b helping. Trouble is I'm getting really attached to them. :)

Amazing how different their individual personalities are from the very first couple days.

I hear you loud n' clear! I had promised 4 Millies' to a friend. When the day came, it was like parting with family

. I still have 8, but do miss the other 4...

Its been a tough couple of days..
Yesterday I found another egg bound hen dead ...in the morning ..another one of the TSC white rocks
Today another young hen was acting sick for a couple days .so I picked her up & she had a full water crop .( was not sour )
I tried to help her lose some of the liquid & she died .
I think she was dieing but I think I killed her ..liquid got in her lungs ..
I know now ...You are only supposed to flip them for 2 seconds & then rest & try again for 2 seconds

My advice even though you didn't ask. Make sure they have plenty of both kinds of grit.

I'm of the opinion that soft shelled eggs can cause problems. I toss some Oyster shell in the feed and provide it free choice. Commercial feed does not provide enough. If you are buying "mill" feed even more so you should provide grit.

To prove my point, take some mash and pour some water into it. Watch how the mash settles. I prefer the "grower" sized grit since I have a variety of sized birds.

Two, when I give them bread, greens or treats I dump lots of the insoluble grit with it. Yes they can find grit on the ground and mine seem to dig for something but I still make sure they have plenty. You want to keep things moving in the crop. Grit helps the crop which is part of the digestive system. I just dump a large can of grit in the same spot of the run or in front of the coop door, every so often. If I give them lettuce or greens I dump the grit right on top of it.

I figure that much like Fiber in our digestive tract, grit helps keep things moving in theirs. Besides it can't hurt and it may help is how I look at lots of things.

Though I haven't consider Jamie Lee Curtis' Activia twice a day.

Love ya,
