NY chicken lover!!!!

Hey Rancher, I don't have all the answers but I found some really cool site called BYC that sure has helped. Yall are great people with lots of combined experience. Gramma I am so sorry about your loss.

S:Everyone... once the 1st chicks hatch get game bird starter.
M:Hens stop laying without layer?
S: nope. More protein in chick food
Quote: GOOD ADVISE:

I as a rule I keep my birds on grower until that first egg, but chickens are tricky.

GR: AS A GENERAL rule I try to keep them off layer until they are ready

I asked Stony what he does to stop the older hens from eating the baby food ?
S: Everyone ...once the 1st chicks hatch get game bird starter.

Give it another day to see if they get out by themselves .
Sometimes when they are still in the membrane they are not quite ready to come out .
Maybe still absorbing the yolk ...or just resting . Longs they have a air hole they should be okay .
I know it is hard to resist helping them ...I want to do that too.
I had one that stayed in like that for 2 days ...on the third day I gently helped them ...
Thank you, still in shell peeping, 4 under the hen threw some weeds herbs in cage went right after them with the hen. Gramma you chucks could make great little horror movie out that clip-) Everyone stay safe.

Anyone? I need a magnet for our dish washer that says, "don't forget the soap". I suspect DW did it again.

FYI, if your dishwasher isn't cleaning so well, check the holes in the water arms. I found plastic labels from Disney plastic ware in ours and a wood chip.

Another FYI, do not put plastic in the dishwasher. Some with numbers 3, 6 and another I forget can leach that chemical stuff. Saw this on CBS this morning. All the Disney stuff is cracked. Dish washers get too hot!

Another FYI, Baking soda is a safer alternative to dealing with grease in Cast Iron pans. Oh and don't put these in the dishwasher either, it takes the seasoning off. Mary Janes Farm magazine has an article on how to reseason your Cast Iron.

Have you noticed Cast Iron is making a comeback. Well that and Vinyl records.

Seems to me more men started giving wives a hard time when they switched to Aluminum pans.

Just kidding.

Do you read Mary Janes Farm magazine? Just got the new copy in the mail, it was gift subscription. I enjoy it, and it's an interesting magazine, though I don't know if it'd pay for a subscription myself.

Sorry for your losses, those that had them recently. I've been in contact with a few people locally and they've been having losses too.
A few months ago, I also "helped" a hen with a crop full of liquid, I think it was a sour crop & I ended up "helping her die" too. It was only after I'd done some
research here on BYC that I discovered that was the wrong thing to do. Oh, well, now I know.

In the process of selling off my rabbits, just "one more thing" that takes away precious time from really being able to focus on the poultry.
Sold all their cages, but not all the rabbits, so had to put them "out to pasture" in metal dog crates inside the chicken's extra grass paddocks (not at the same time as the chickens).
They're used to eating fresh greens, so they're enjoying a feast out there.
Just came in for a "break", thought I'd check in with you all, and then get back to work.

I don't subscribe since there are too many magazines I like. I have bought an issue if it has something I want to read. I find it interesting that while women get the focus on "mens" work, men rarely get the focus if they do "womens" work. Lord have mercy DW has been busy sewing for the GK's. Cooks dinner and does other things, but that's another story.

I've recommended folks share an subscription.

As for your rabbits? I'm sorry you're giving them up. I hope you'll reconsider and just downsize to a manageable hutch. Lots of folks moving to eating rabbit. I've considered some simply for the manure for my compost, but then I'd considered Jacob Sheep too. ( I have no pasture)

In other news. Had a friend stop by to drop off a jelly jar, and ask if I had eggs. Her doc said her allergies make commercial eggs no good for her. She should eat organic/pastured chicken eggs.

Start the chicks off right on the game layer feed

Run some vinegar and backing soda threw or citric acid to descale also works in washing machine. Love my cast iron find the good stuff at garage sales cheap along with copper bottom pans, and nice collection of glass measuring cups. To all you Canners have you ever made or tied sweet pumpkin pickles?

my just because breed I have to say is going to be a lavender something. Not sure what. I think the color is beautiful, just need to figure out a breed. Silkies , however cute, are just not for me if they don't lay well and aren't good heavy birds. Family of 7 requires lots of food.

I have heritage rir and barred rocks. A all are good layers, even in the winter. I dress out the cocktails soon at 15 or 16 weeks. Last years Cockrels dressed out at almost 2 pounds a piece and that was just taking the legs and breast meat. I canned 10 quart jars of chicken. The culled hens dressed out around 5 to 6 pounds, just legs and breasts. Plenty of meat for Dh and I and my dauthter, who shops my pantry when she needs meat and eggs. With 7 to feed, the key is to hatch a lot, freeze or can every Cockrell and cull slow or non laying hens at 2 years. Eat those birds because you will have hatched out their replacements. I do this yearly so by the end of July or early august my pullets are laying and I have canned or frozen all the cocktails and older hens.

Rancher, our older dishwasher I'd have to tear apart every few months, plastic straw wrappers from juice pouches usually, how do they get in there!!!
New washer has a removable trap screen, but wife wants old one back, new one takes forever to wash a load.

Afternoon all. Finally got the juvenile silkies moved out to little big man's coop. Used the wire playpen as a barrier for the look but don't touch part. Splash, my hen, is pitchING an all out tantrum that those 5 babies are in her house. She's such a drama queen. I tried to introduce her to them earlier but she just went after them with a vengence. She's just going to have to learn to live with the newbies. Little big man is ok with it. He only gets going when she starts her bawking nonsense.

Putting in the new nest pads tomorrow. I got ceramic eggs as well. Those rotten egg eaters are going to be in for a surprise when they peck them! Maybe they will stop. Had both the terrorists and the monsters out at the same time the other day by accident. The boys didn't mess with their father but did a little with their mothers. The black sexlinks girls got into it with some of the moms. This is going to get interesting when we cull and combine the groups. I hope the Duke can keep the peace!

Ate some cherry tomatoes off my plant. Soon good. Gave the chickens the nasty tasteless store bought ones. My tomato plants are huge and setting lots of fruit as is my cucumber plant. Looking forward to lots of good eating. My blackberry plants are huge, 6 feet tall. Getting more fruit on them as well.

Can't wait to hear how many chicks you hatch from witchypants. I'm hoping the girls do one more in late fall but we will see. Silkies pretty much decide when they want to, not when you need them to!
