NY chicken lover!!!!

Managed to have 4 of the eggs hatch. 3 of them were hatching out of the wrong end and I ended helping them out. The 4th took it's jolly old time hatching, but all my duck eggs seem to take their time...Very happy that I got 2 blues. Would have loved it if they were all blue, but I'll take the 2. It has been a very nerve racking few days. Very happy

Spotted duck. How many trips you making this way?

Morning everyone,

Checked some eggs last evening. One duck egg had a hole and I could see some breathing. Didn't check it this morning yet.
DUCK! I didn't expect them to start til Mon. but one hatched last night.

Yeah!!! I can't make it out till Sunday late afternoon/early evening. How many eggs have made it to this point... Is it black or gray?

Looks to be black. She has another but I'm not sure when that one will hatch. It looks like it might not. I think it's a quiter. There are veins, but perhaps I've put it in later. Some didn't go in when this one did.

Now I don't/didn't expect you to come running each time one hatches but that is up to you. I've got them due on the calendar for the 10th and 11th. I tossed another one today it didn't look good. The hen has another. I will candle again tonight. They're in the Marans coop and the one hen has three and she is not easy. She bites hard!

Anyhow this one will go to the brooder tonight so nothing happens to it.

I'll keep you posted.

Well, it looks like we lost our roo today. His harem has stayed in the coop for most of the morning. I was out calling him and found a small pile of feathers......:(
I didn't really want a roo, got him as a pullet - haha!  He was very good with the girls and respectful of people & extremely handsome - I think I'll miss him. :(

I'm so sorry. I lost my cream legbar who was 21 wks old today also. I feel you pain. I will miss him very much.

I've been harvesting from my garden. I've done 10 quarts of pickles with more to do. Right now I'm blanching beans for freezing and I have enough tomatoes for a couple quarts. I got my first great white tomato today too (an heirloom variety). I'm thinking to hollow out some eggs to make decorative garlands tonight too, similar to ornaments. I think it will be fun.

We've also been sorting birds today. Sending a bunch of roos ( BLRW, golden cuckoo maran, frizzle NN OE, Large fowl cochin) and extra ducks to auction in West Winfield tomorrow. If anyone is going to want any they need to let me know and make plans to get them. DH says he's not holding anything long, we don't want to feed them anymore.

what time is the auction? I don't need any birds as I'm still trying to sell some chicks, but I love auctions and live a short trip from WW.

I am happy for you. 2 blues yay

Butter is a shy chick ...at the bottom of the pecking order ... I hand feed her some of the time if her crop is empty I usually find her roosting at odd places at night or alone most of the day This was tonight
Awe. Poor Butter. Luckily my littles at the bottom all hang out together. There are 4... so they have the company of each other. I absolutely don't like the BSL and RSLs I have... so aggressive compared th the other cuties I have. Makes me want to be "the Red Queen" from Alice in Wonderland screaming, "Off with there heads!!!" Gah, never again.

I have 4 missing 8-week old chicks. They are usually together and usually back in their coop before dark. I can't find them. No signs of predators and where I live the only threats are stray/neighbor dogs and feral/neighbor cats. Hopefully they bunkered down somewhere and will return in the morning. :(
