NY chicken lover!!!!

I don't believe in trapping or killing chipmunks. They cause me no harm or the chickens. They just has to learn the hard way the chickens are protective their feed. I won't kill anything just because it's a bother.

I think Chipmunks are cute !
I do try to remove the remains of the cats catches ..so they dont eat them ...
If he catches a bird he gets scolded ...He had a baby bird yesterday ...I scolded him & released it & away it flew ..
I was like ohhh ...I guess it is okay

Rancher, I hope you're not implying that I didn't do research before I got my bearded dragon, because of course I did. I've had her for three years and raised her from a baby, so yes, I have done plenty of research. The truth is yes, she could have diseases that the chickens could catch - if she was kept unhealthily and improperly. Just as the chickens could be carrying diseases that they could give to her if they were kept the wrong way. Salmonella and coccidiosis can be transferred in either direction, and she (my bearded dragon) who is kept inside in a large enclosure that's cleaned every day and is only given bugs that I breed myself is much less likely to contract either of those diseases than are the chickens who live outside and can be exposed to them at any time through the soil or wild birds. The truth is my two pet lizards are far more likely to get sick from the chickens than the chickens are likely to get sick from them. Perhaps before assuming someone hasn't done research and telling them to do some, you should do some research first yourself.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, I'm just sick of people demonizing my pet because she has scales and assuming that she's a bastion of disease. Cats carry toxoplasmosis, a nasty parasite that causes delayed reaction time and contributes to car accident death. How often do you hear about that? Yet thanks to cats 30 to 50 percent of the human population carries it. But cats have fur and most people think they're cute, so I guess that's fine. Reptiles always get the short end of the stick, sadly.

Now, now I was not implying anything of the sort. I certainly was not demonizing your pet, be it lizard, snake, bird etc. etc.

However we all need to be aware of things to take precautions when keeping animals that provide our food. It's simple Bio Security.

What ever precautions one takes is personal and I understand that. Still there are some folks here who are new to poultry and may not be aware of the dangers to their birds.

The fact is that many cross contaminations from mice cause the poultry industry trouble. I would be remiss if I did not point this out.

I also understand we can take all the precautions we know and still have trouble, but a ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Some folks might read things and say to themselves, "I knew that", while others like myself at times might say, "Wow, I did not know that". That's what makes this forum so helpful.

I wish you well and meant no offense.

I just don't know what to say - other than to lend a hug to you, Pyxis ....

That's what I wanted when I responded with my opinion to an opinion .... and somehow felt anger at me from the general board like it was me bringing the topic up. The poster even acted like they were just responding to that - sharing an opinion and not like they brought the whole thing up.

There is a way to share knowledge and a way that lectures. A way you speak or share info with a person new and a way you do with someone you have dealt w/for years. Months and months ago I felt I was dismissed as a know-nothing by the person I blocked making all the worst assumptions about my "research" on a topic- I did it without insulting them, without announcing it ..

I hung in there and just chatted with others - but if they see this behavior over and over and still engage - then I don't see a point in sharing my opinions when only I get a cold shoulder if my view as a response to something is not welcomed - so I just read now, no need to post much.

I'm not here to change anyone's mind, haggle or argue - and I certainly don't want to be patronized by someone whom I have no respect for - so I'll go back to lurking again. Guess I still have some sore feelings ! I used to feel this was a little cyber home and visited every morning with my coffee. This wasn't a happy post - so all the more reason to button it up

Thanks for the hug M and thank you Rancher for the apology. People are always telling me my dragon, a loved pet that I raised from a baby, is a gross disease carrying monster, so it's a hot button for me. I just can't stand that because she has scales people think it's okay to tell me that this creature that I raised from a few weeks old, loves to cuddle with me at night and be petted, and lets me dress her up and rides around on my shoulder and has never once gotten me or anyone else sick and has never hurt a single person is a monster. Since you had quoted my post and said "Please do some research..." it seemed that were you talking directly to me and telling me to do research, which I found I little insulting, but I see that that was not your intent. Perhaps a little bit more care with phrasing next time, since this is written word and no one can hear tone or tell that someone is talking to the group and not one person (especially when that person is quoted in the post).

After all, does this look like a diseased, terrifying monster to anyone? :)

So, who's going to Cobleskill for the ENYSPA Fall Show? I put it on my calendar.

I think that's the one that Baking, Metella, and I were thinking about going to. It's in September, right? I was originally going to enter some of my WHs in the show but they aren't quite mature enough yet and now with all the bird flu hysteria going around I've decided to keep them home.
