NY chicken lover!!!!

Well I took her to her vet 1.5 hours away. They did an xray and exam her insides were all inflamed. They thought markes, but gave me options. i could put her down, or try antibiotic for a few days to see if she improves... So i opted with the iv fluids, anti imflamitory and clavamox.

After the fluids she had an appetite and and ate 1/2a banana on the way home. But this morning she ate eggs by syringe again amd was sleepy.....

So. Im hoping for the best. Not much more i can do.

Lisa523...I'm sorry you felt ignored about your question. I did read your post and had nothing to offer you in terms of advice because I really don't know what is wrong with your sick bird. We are self taught here about illness and injuries because we have to figure things out as they happen. We share our knowledge when others post about things we have already dealt with. There are very few vets who know anything about chickens. There is one, Dr Peter brown, at first state vet supplies who is a great chicken vet and could help you.

Morning all. So nice to sleep in. Dh was kind enough to let the cheeps out this am. Legolas and family practically ran him over getting out to freerange. It's cooler today and the quietness of my yard tells me that the cheeps are enjoying the cooler weather. I am enjoying it also.

Pyxis...so glad your cat is doing better!

Speaking of, Abby is getting her morning nap in after being up all night hunting for another mouse. She is quite full of herself, having killed her first mouse!

My plan for today is to do as little as possible and indulge in chicken therapy. Who needs drugs when you have chickens???

One last thing...a big thank you to all the veterans, past and present, living and dead, for your service. Memorial day is a day to remember your sacrifices and the sacrifices of your families that allow the rest of us to live free in this great country of ours. Thank you.

Hey Lisa , Im not skipping you ..Ive been to the fair .....I need more info ...age of the chicken ?

I have a very sick chicken.  She has little to no appetite does not drink much and is as light as a feather.
This is not good news..Honestly
Usually when they are like this they have something seriously wrong with them ..and cant be helped ..
I have given dieing chickens a little whiskey to help them relax & pass .
Some kill them & put them out of their misery ...I could never do this ..

I'm not sure if I should take her to the vet who is 1.5 hours away?

Most Vets dont know anything about chickens

Im sorry for yoir sick chicken. It is so hard to be helpless. The wiskey is a good idea if she gets worse.
The chickens is 4 mths old. And i took hwr to an avian vet. Thats why so far away.

Hello chiickenychick, welcome to the club!
My cat has finally become a real cat. She came upstairs wire a dead mouse. She has finally killed her first mouse, in the house. She is an indoor cat. She walked around meowing with it in her mouth and kept showing me. I had to praise her, then dispose of the body. She is now laying here quite pleased with herself.

I use the turkey pellets as they have the highest protein content. The cheeps seem to be doing well on it.

Mean people are out in force lately. Been working double time getting stuff done. Thank goodness I am off the next two days. Need some serious chicken therapy.
I like the higher protiens too. I usually use Agway egg producer pellets with 21%. This year poor Big Delores is in a bad molt. She was broody but I've been feeding a 16% pellet.

Where do you get Turkey pellets?

I have read that heritage lines do better with a higher protien feed.

I really hope the organizers are using this year to good use in re-organizing the displays a bit better.
I found id hard to get info on certain chickens - no info/contact and many of the cages looking scruffy and ill cared for. I think it needs a bit of a Spring clean IMHO,

I spoke with one of the guys there and he said that they use kids to tag the cages. I also think they use volunteers to tend to all the chickens. I wonder if anyone here would consider volunteering.

It might be cool to have a BYC group, all wearing BYC T shirts. Willing to answer questions about the different breeds. You know just walk around and discuss Back Yard chicken keeping.

If you check You tube you'll find videos of chickens with Mareks. If it is Mareks there isn't a cure and they eventually die. I haven't found much in the way of cures for chickens. We just do what we can and hope for the best.

When Buckwheat swelled up I researched and got told there was nothing. She's still with us.

I had an EE that walked like a Runner Duck and since she seemed okay and was laying I did nothing. She eventually died, after quite a few months. She was a great layer up to that point.

Unless a disease strikes a lot of birds at a time and in the commercial industry I don't think there is much concern.

I got the "Blue Book" for Cavies/ guinea pigs years ago from Cornell and it basically said not much was done since guinea pigs were so easy to replace. Shaggy's leg eventually went down, (swollen) and he lived for some time after. I just put heat packs on his leg.

So what's my point? Just that not much is done to help us BYC keepers.

Seems to me without a vaccine, and they're not 100% effective, Mareks is possible. Wild birds carry it and since we free range how can we avoid it? I stopped putting a feeder out when I got chickens. To buy Vaccines for a few chicks isn't cost effective. We simply need to practice biosecurity.

Some folks understand why we say, "no I'm sorry you can't go into the coop, etc. etc." Others go Hmph!

Perhaps the fad of keeping a back yard flock will inspire the Veternarian world to do some research to help us small holders.

I would not have guessed that selling my rooster would make me sad. He was bringing tidbits to eat for my pullets. He was so good to them. I hope he enjoys his new home and 8 new girlfriends.

Have a question How did you sell your rooster? I know the question sounds funny I ended up with 2 roosters out of 6 that were supposed to be all hens. So I need to get rid of one I would like to rehome it .
