NY chicken lover!!!!

a roof isn't the solution to these monsters, grounding is. They were on top of the roof of the coop half the day yesterday. They just want to be UP.
Have you tried clipping wings? You'd have to redo them of course.

I found four C. Rocks outside the fenced i yard today.

There mother never jumped the fence. I will have to buy a serious pair of clippers to trim their wings. I wouldn't mind but they can't figure out how to get back in!

My 2.5 year old daughter used to want eggs every day, but she is currently refusing all eggs. Just when we start getting good fresh ones... toddlers!!:barnie
I have 5 kids. 6 y/o boy 8y/o girl 12 y/o boy 14y/o boy and 15y/o girl. They love eggs . We do 2 big breakfast a week and I bake a lot so until the girls get in full swing I won't have extras.

I hadn't even thought of that. Thank you. I will start research now. Off I go to search the world of BYC.

I found only clipping one side was best, makes them fly lopsided, clip both wings they just flap harder. Mine still managed to climb to the top of trees. It worked for me in the past, other birds.

HISIRISGEM For cabbage loopers I just soak the cabbages in seven spray....just kiding. I use a natural biological pesticide containing Bacillus thuringiensis, it's a bacteria that attacks their digestive system safe for beneficial insects and bees. I think it said you can eat the cabbage the next day.

Purpletie3 thanks for the garlic tips, I'm going to give it another try. I used already sprouted cloves maybe that's where I went wrong?
They did grow the next yr but never headed.
Didn't know about the 'curly scape' either.

Rancher awesome use of cardboard. I can get all I want from work for free. Bet it's a good spot to find worms for fishing :-)

I'm sure. I haven't fished in years. I do like it though. We used to pick worms at the ball field across form our hose when I was young. havn't done that in years either. 1 cent a worm.

As for the garlic mine has sprouted before but it still survived. Chickens even ate the tops off. Use large cloves and don't use store bought. It's sprayed to keep it from sprouting.

You don't want them to go to seed. Snap off the scapes and fry them or use them to make pesto.

I've got to get mine in the ground asap. Snow tomorrow? Well I still have time. I expect Thursdays might be good. Lots of information out there on growing garlic. Check your local books store for magazines and read it for free, like I do. Unless there is something more than just one article I don't buy a magazine.

I'll take your advice on clipping just one wing. It's hard enough to do one when I'm doing it by myself.

Is anyone using the petroleum jelly on their girls tonight so they don't get frost bite? I know they said it may snow but weather.com looks like it won't be below temps. I'm guessing we have a bit more time before this happens right?

I don't usually put pertroleum jelly on the girls - their combs are usually small enough and close enough to their heads that I'm not so concerned, unless they're leghorns. I worry about my roosters. This year I'll be especially after my buff orp/leghorn cross as he has quite the comb on him. But if your ventilation is good enough in your coop I wouldn't worry about it tonight, I don't think it's going to be cold enough for long enough to worry much.
