NY chicken lover!!!!

The girls (and boys) moved from the coop to the barn last weekend and now they won't come out to play. I had the door open all day and those buggers were too busy playing in the hay. I guess barn/hay bugs taste better than the outside ones. They also refuse to lay in the milk crate boxes hubby made them. So I made a 3×3 box with scrap wood and filled it with bedding. Yup they love it.

Everytings fine,I am now wanting to do things, travel, etc. that the chickens limited me in doing. And this morning going out at 31 degrees, clinched it! LOL
You know, I've been considering the same thing. I'd like to go south and it would mean finding someone to care for the birds while I'm away. With my son going to Alaska that is not a trip you make for a three day visit.

So I do understand. I've been considering giving up my C. Rocks. There okay layers but better meat birds. Definitely a Dual purpose line.

Plus with DW still not feeling well, we're both tired.

I do like your Light sussex though. Big Delores molted for the first time this year but bounced right back. She looks pretty good.

FYI, I think I have an EE who is broody.

Remember folks what ever happens, You're not at the end of the road, just changing directions. ( I hope I don't live to regret saying that)

No, you probably haven't seen other SFH like her, because that big of a crest is too large for what the "unofficial standard is". I'm sure it happened before, but it seems to me that in Sweden these double-crested wouldn't have survived the predators as well, so most likely didn't survive long enough to breed themselves. It's the result of breeding crested to crested, and she actually has a vaulted skull like the Polish breed. I didn't realize it would happen in just one generation, I thought it'd take breeding crested to crested over many generations. That's why I'm now using only non-crested SFH roosters. One person I sold hatching eggs to around the same time that Sasha was hatched, ended up with another "double-crested" chick. Live and learn - it's part of life!

Anyways, I think Sasha looks adorable and I'm glad she found a good home.
My husband calls our pullets "little moochers". lol They eat and eat and eat but they're not laying. In due time dear one. In due time. Hahaha This sounds like a crazy question but I'm guess you eat your duck and turkey eggs? Or are you using them to hatch more ducks and turkeys? Do you grow them for eating? Just out of curiosity. I know everyone has their own reasons for raising them but I've seen some people raising ducks in their small backyards and I always thought you had to have a farm for it. Same for turkeys (though honestly they fly over our chainlink fence into our yard).
We eat our duck eggs. I don't think that it tastes much different and I when baking I only use duck eggs and I think that my baking is better. My turkeys haven't started laying yet. I don't have a huge farm. I only have 5 acres and my duck and turkeys stay pretty close to home. And yes some turkeys fly. You can clip on of their wings. I didn't clip mine and they fly up onto our roof almost every day. Kids think that it is funny when they are up there. Me not so much.. I have a hoop coop that my turkeys are in and a recycled/remodeled chicken tractor that I use for my ducks.

Happy Weekend everyone!

Well, a bit of a new perspective. Today we got called for a "little visiter" (I mentioned we are foster/adoptive certified in a past post) who has a terminal illness. This little child fighting such a big battle seems to now put that 1200.00 water bill into perspective a little bit. We all have those moments where we seem to feel like all we're getting is lemons. At least we're able to make lemonade. My heart is heavy for this little one. It's time to put my big girl pants on and make this house a fun and joyful one. Laughter is the best medicine.

Checked on the ladies today, added more pine shavings, changed their water dish, fed them the dry feed and put a bit of diatomaceous earth down and a little bit on them as I've read winter can come with mite problems. I'm not sure how true that is, but I thought I'd try it anyways. I've seen a video where it's used (the food grade DE) in feed for the girls as well as dogs and cats to keep away worms. It's a dewormer. Our kitten was diagnosed with worms. Its common in kittens I guess, but it freaks me out. The vet said they'll take care of it next week. That the other animals won't get it because it's carried by a host. fleas. I mad at myself. I got a kitten from a lady who said it was 8 weeks old and I knew it sounded fishy. I took her to the vet right away and I suspected right. She was only around 4 weeks. Taken away from the mother too soon. I was miffed because while it was an elderly lady, The mother and babies were all gone. Only two kittens left and we only took one (should have taken the second one). The Vet told me we saved her. Wish we saved the other one. We had to feed her kitten milk every 3 hours or so for a while but when we got her, I had to bathe her in dish soap to get all the fleas out of her. I took a flea comb and got rid of them that way and just kept bathing her in dish soap once in a while. It had poop caked in her nails even at 4wks and something tells me there was more to that story. I can't imagine that poor woman living in her home LOADED with fleas! It had to be loaded with fleas if this little one had hundreds on her and she had the mother and more kittens besides the only two that were left. Anyways, I wondered if she'd had them. Her tummy was HUGE. Our dog and the other cat have taken her on as their own. Very cute but I was worried about them catching something. So far so good but I'm having them looked at as well.

Such is life. It doesn't always go the way we want it to be. The kitten is as cute as a button though.

I never would have thought we'd have two cats, a dog, 8 chickens and not only be foster or adoptive parents but have a miracle baby to boot. Life is certainly a journey filled with just as much joy and laughter as diversity.

I hope your all enjoying your weekend. I can't fathom what our winter is going to be. Lately I've been getting comments about how hard the winter is going to be this year and we're in the snow belt. It certainly will be interesting to see who's correct. The Farmers Almanac or those saying we're going to have El Nino bringing us a lighter winter. Hmmm. Anyone want to guess?

I want to wish you good luck and happy travels. Winter does make things harder. My kids still keep asking for more pets and I tell them I have more than enough to care for now.
Your marans are only black copper now?
