NY chicken lover!!!!

At 2 pm mine still hadn't come out, but they must have gotten thirsty. I just went out and they are huddled under the coop. Wont touch the snow! Too funny.

Some of my more hardy ladies came out to get their fermented feed - the others? I had to take a feeder full in to them in the barn! Spoiled rotten chickens!

Had a scare this evening, saw a big old raccoon coming out of the barn. Sent the dogs out to corner him and I dispatched him.

Fortunately it seems he wasn't the least bit interested in the chickens - today....

Freezing rain and sleet here today too. Chickens want nothing to do with it...definitely chickens like Gramma said lol!

My hens seem to not be laying this past week, I have some supplemental light out back by the coop but not inside, would that affect their laying? I also recently started giving them feed that I made myself combining a few recipes I found, I'm wondering if they're getting enough of what they need? I feed them a mixture of cracked corn, black oil sunflower seeds, split peas, lentils, flax seed, chia seed, soft and hard red wheat and flaked oats. Oyster shell is available to them.

None came out of either coop. Tossed some cracked corn and chopped up cooked beef liver in the runs and they scrambled out Lol! Funny, silkies were first out of the one coop.

Hello fellow New Yorkers! :frow

New to the BYC community, and chickens. I introduced myself over at the "New Members" thread but decided to post here as well.

I just moved to the countryside near the town of Ouaquaga (yes, it took me a some time to learn the spelling ;) ) but the location of our new home also places us pretty close to West Windsor and Colesville for those of you who are familiar with the area. It thankfully wasn't a far move as we originally came from around the Binghamton area.

Welcome, wildest. I'm pretty new too. I'm down in queens. City folk.

I need some opinions from y'all. My husband has a meat cutting saw at his store, and every night when they clean out the inside of the saw, they throw out a bunch of meat scraps, usually fine, ground up meat and bone that gets pulled down by the blade. I want to give some to my chicken, but should I cook it first? Or is it safe to give him raw??? Please let me know what you think.

I would cook it just to be safe. You could turn it into a mid afternoon treat with veggies . Sautee up the meat/bone then mix with veggies and give. I wouldn't give him a lot though. He needs protien but not too much. Oh or you could make "meat pops" in an ice try, cooked first. Put the meat and enough broth to cover in an ice tray, save for hot weather.

I've been giving him little bits of torn up kale when I give him his lunch ( grower feed), and he eats that. I hear ppl say they give their chickens kitchen scraps, like vegetable peels and rinds. I suppose those need to be cooked also.
