NY chicken lover!!!!

People make me crazy. I posted a breeding trio of ayam cemanis on craigslist. I asked $300 for them, only because the rooster has red in his wattles. These are adult six month old birds that are about to start laying, and I'm charging half of what the going price is for chicks on them.

I get an email this morning asking if they are available, and how old they are, which was stated in the ad, so they clearly didn't read it very well. Then the person also has the gall to ask if I would take $150 for them! That's less than the price of one chick. I couldn't believe it.

In other news, I ordered Lacie's boyfriend today! A roman tufted gander, same breed as her. He will be shipping with a female cayuga duck and a female fawn and white runner, who will be Hershey's girlfriends when they get older. I can't wait until they get here. Goslings hands down are the sweetest, cutest babies.
I've had my share of experience with CL. People who are NOT on BYC and some who are have no concept of any breed other than Whitel leghorns and RIR's. They don't know breeds heritage or other wise.

I get people who contact me and then don't show or follow up.

@Pyxis I don't think that is a bad price. PhoredaBurds wanted the same, I was hoping for less, that was my thought also, half price of chicks, and chicks can die on you. I'd love to buy them if I had the $ right now. I'll be looking for some sometime. I'd at least like to get a cull cockerel sometime.

Craigslist people can be dumb. I sold a HD plow truck advertised as 'Scrap or parts' $650, 90,000 miles runs excellent, very low miles on rebuilt HD transmission. transmission cost $1,600 just for rebuild and I removed and replaced. Good hydraulic plow. Frame rotted out, front axle broke, tires dry rotted. You know how many calls I got on it that they wanted to bring plates and drive it home.....Bad enough some tried talking me down lower than what I could get for scrap metal myself, just didn't want to bother with it anymore and hoping someone could use it for the motor/tranny.
Guy that finally bought it just asked for directions and it was gone, no questions.

What is the obsession over sillies? They are small and not great layers from what I have read. Other than a therapy animal they seem to serve no purpose. Just curious, I'm not judging silkie owners hack I have a midget dog.

Several things. I breed them, although not currently (I need to update my signature). They're very friendly - people call them lap chickens. Although not great layers, they do produce eggs larger than most bantam breeds. Their legs are heavily feathered, so they can't do as much damage to your yard and garden, which is appealing to some people. They are fibromelanistic, and supposedly that means their meat is better for you. The meat is considered a delicacy in Asian cultures. They are docile, great for people who want pets or kids to use for 4H. Their unusual look makes them great as an ornamental bird, if someone is looking for a bird that's more a pet or yard candy than a layer. And they are hands down the best breed for brooding. A silkie will be a great mother and will hatch you batch after batch of chicks.

Silkies are popular in my area. I'm going to be breeding my lavender and porcelain silkies, mainly because I love mine and their personalities. Mine have laid an egg a day since they became laying age.

Mine are just funny to watch, friendly and goofy. But they are the only bantam I have now because I want large layers with nice eggs.

Broodieness seems like a great reason to me. Sure would save on the incubator. Can they live with the big kids or do they need private housing? Are there any special accommodations they need ? Is there one strain better than another? Are they hardy in the cold?

Sorry about all the questions but they are new to me and it grabbed my interest. No I don't have them yet but Rancher thinks they are aliens and some of you think they are the way to go. Varying opinions help make decisions.

I keep mine with the big birds and they hold their own. I don't do anything special for them. As for one strain being better than another, that depends. In terms of showing, yes, some people definitely have better stock than others. Cold hardy, mine have never had a problem as long as they are in the coop at night with the others.

No need for show quality, yall that I post pics for and whatever company I get are the only ones who see the flock. My only concern buying any bird chick or egg is health. Once I have a few traits I really like I will breed them to get a better end product. Right now it's about egg production and size at process. They must serve a purpose .

Mine are with my bigger birds. Like Pyxis said they hold their own. Mine do just fine in the cold. I only have 2 pullets but ordered hatching eggs in hopes of getting a male. I got mine from a breeder in PA but she has changed to breeding bantam Cochins. I'm not sure about the traits needed for show quality but the lady I got them from said they were.
