NY chicken lover!!!!

When mine drinks, his wattles definitely get into the water, and at these temps.....I just took them outside. 9 degrees. Thankfully most of the wind is done. The rabbits seemed happy to leave their hutch also. They'll probably do their business, stretch their legs, and run back inside.

Oh ...I misunderstood your post "Temp in my chx house is 4 degrees."B] and little Bugger Cuckoo maran /aussie mix) in the cellar ..
Yep chicken house was closed up Friday night and will not open again until tomorrow morning. Tho they are getting a little restless in there, lol. Aside from rooster waddles, they all look good. The sun is warming the house up today (35 in there now). I've got an indoor/outdoor thermometer with remote sensor in the chicken house. It's nice to be able to monitor the temps in there without leaving the human house, but maybe it's too much info.

I just opened the small coop door thinking my chickens would be getting restless and want some space. They told me I'm crazy... it's 4 degrees out, I just ran all over doing errands, what are they complaining about? Hahahah

It would be Too Much Info for me ...
I think everyone with closed coops should at least open the door for a little bit so it vents some ..
Humidity needs to escape ...
It was 25 in my coop today ...the fermented feed was froze on the top ..
Im going to see if I can find a metal container for the dishes to set in so the heat from the heating pad covers more area

I opened my coop doors this morning - they are all out and pecking around in the sun. No worries at all.. I've had frostbite on a few of the large combed birds over the years but none this year so far that I can tell. My roos don't have big wattles, thankfully..

Same! Opened the coop door when I came home from work about 7:30 and they were all good. My lav orp even laid her first egg today. My silkies are even doing good. My barred blue egg layer chick has been loving to run around my basement when they are out of their brooder! She's going to have a crest, wonder if my pet chicken mixes a CCL with barred rock.

I would love to plant wind blocks. Unfortunately the biggest drifting issue is across an access road we share with 2 other homes. The wind block would have to go on a neighbors land. That neighbor will not even chip in for the plowing expense, let alone allow me to plant bushes on his land. Either side of the access road are fields, across which the wind blows, carrying whatever snow is there and dropping it in my way. I do sometimes try to blast thru the drifts with my car, but that's not always successful and prob not so good for the car. We have talked about finding a cheap plow truck, but I picture it becoming a rusty eyesore in my driveway. My plow guy is good & reasonably priced. I just get frustrated w the wind and the drifts. Looking forward to spring.
Can you post a pic? I would think you could plant along both sides and front of your property. A nice row of "Nine barks would look nice. Nine barks are easy to propagate with cuttings. About 4 feet wide when full size and the same high. They come in nice colors too. We had Wine and it started to sprout runners that hung down.

But you could also plant along the outside of your coop for added protection. What about a temp fencing set up.
