NY chicken lover!!!!

I don't check in for a day or so and there are over 100 posts to skim over. Busy on here lately.

Welcome to all the new Peeps that have joined us.

Poor duckers leg. I don't know what it is, but hope that it feels better soon.

I have been thinking about thinning out some of my ducks to get down to just the really well marked ones, but that would cut my flock of 14 by more then half.

And of course most all the best marked ones are drakes

Chickens are starting to lay more. Well they were. The last few days I have only gotten one or two. It makes trying to get some set aside for hatching hard. There are a few that has some frostbit tips, but nothing like last year.

Overall everyone is doing alright and I'm sure that they are looking forward to spring.

I would have someone hold her and splint it. Also put her by herself for a few days.  Somewhere she can't move around alot.  Looks broke.

I had a C. Rock roo that got hurt jumping down from the roost. They're so heavy they bent the support for their current roost. I have to make sure they have lots of padding and have lowers the roost quite a bit. I ended up putting him down.

I am sorry if the jokes upset you, I meant no harm.

Thanks for the info, nope I thought you jokes were great gave me a good laugh tried to splint yesterday but she kept ripping it off, also she was not eating or drinking when I separated her and she seemed to be doing worse, so I guess I will let be and hope for the best, she still runs up and down the ramp just favors that leg

@HISIRISHGEM Ive got a bunch of Appenzeller spitzhaubens. They lay white eggs. When descriptions of them say they're flighty & don't do well w confinement. However, I've found that they're very inquisitive birds, that after handling them a little when they are chicks, they are very social, sweet birds. Not lap chickens, but several try to stand on my feet when I'm out there feeding them. The birds I have confined to breeding pens don't seem to care, tho when given lots of space, they are very happy as well. They're super cute and efficient as far as feed conversion, considered large fowl, but on the small side of LF. I will be setting some of their eggs next week. LMK if ur interested in chicks.

Forgot about the barred holland, like the dorking they would probably be a calmer breed compared to typical white egg layers. Holland's do have leghorn in their history though.
I think your right about the white holland chickens. I had mentioned maybe getting white hollands on another thread and disappointed someone that jumped on the thread seeing the mention of them, disappointed when they saw I was talking turkeys... Must be they are extinct.
I thought I saw them somewhere before, must have been mistaken, must have been heritage white rocks I saw.

Looks to me the Barred Holland is sparsely available in large day old straight run batches. The white however seems to have fallen extinct due to slow maturity, small size, and white color. I looks like a version of the white leghorn girls in my flock though. Small, useful and self sufficient.
I haven't researched into what the crosses were to make the White Holland. Dorkings do play a part in many "composite breeds".

My Dels of course have the Barred Rock/New Hampshire cross. Part of my "line" are recreations by a BYC member. I'm sorry I was so ignorant and didn't separate my originals and keep them separate. Anyhow Kathinmo, recreated a line and it was popular. I managed to get some of hers. Thing is they're not as big as I'd like, but are good layers. I sometimes think we expect our heritage birds to be a meaty as the Cornish cross. I doubt they ever were.

The Barred Rock is also in the CCL's. There were a number of other crosses with the BR's to create the auto sexing, but they did not survive due to popularity. Of course one could recreate them if one wanted to take the time.

there are many nice breeds but I chose for specific traits. Egg size being one of them. Too I don't think we can pigeon hole any breed to a character trait because like people they change with the individual. There is always they attention thing. The more they are given the more they're calm around us. I guess it's a crap shoot.

@ashleymroles
Glad ur experience was positive. I had a similar experience when I had ordered blue Cochins from them. When I called in the morning of pick up, they told me my order was good to go, but when I drove the hour+ to get there, they did not have my Cochins. Anything else blue they had would be additional costs. They talked me into Russian orloffs (kinda) and "varigated" americanas (EEs). Both probably crosses, but healthy chicks. I've never heard of "golden buffs". I'm sure they're cute tho. And they will lay many eggs for you! Enjoy ur new chickens!!! Yay!

I thought the Poultry Hatchery in Clifton Springs sold chicks that had been sent to them by a breeder?  I didn't realize they hatched their own.

Ironically, one of the guys that owns that place is friends of a friend. He takes horseback riding lessons from the same place my daughter does.  Nice enough guy.  But he was the one that told me their birds are shipped to them.  I could have misunderstood though.  Maybe the eggs were shipped to them and they hatched them?

I actually need to pick up some Freedom Rangers.  I haven't done meaties in the past, but I really do need a chicken supply that does not involve roosters that have aged too long and are skinny anyways.  I've got more chicken broth and pre-cooked/boiled chicken in my freezer than I need for awhile...and that's pretty much all those older chickens are good for.

Ive done freedom rangers a couple years and they were great! Process at 12-14 weeks and they make beautiful meat birds! Enjoy!

Phoredaburds has amazing spitzhaubens! Love my girl (weasel got the other one :( ) I got from her at chickenstock, she is very sweet, kinda bossy to the other girls when she is in the nest box, eats a lot less than my other girls, and lays a large white egg everyday!

Update on my experience with the poultry hatchery in clifton springs:
Overall, I had a great experience and I will definitely be using them in the future,
Glad you had a Good experience ....we were all hoping you would
I also felt that they were the best source of information for chick care .
