I recently took some of my mothers "older" birds to the auction in Springville, NY...I have never gone to or taken birds to an auction before..The commission was 10% of each bird...I also helped her box up her extra ducks...She got an about 5 a piece for them...they were old birds...2 plus years..I don't know if that was good or not...the ducks...was 6 a piece..I didn't stay to see them sell.. I heard folks talking about how they would taste...enough information for me.
Sorry Rancher...tho my mother is now looking for replace chickens...and no the dels and cuckoo's are safe...no eggs form the cuckoo's...

annie, you have been having the worst luck! I hope they turn up! Ginny

Found her head this afternoon. We have the most predators that I have ever seen. All birds are locked insode the coops and will be from now on. Apparently Pheasants do not stay inside like the chickens do. When I went to bed I checked on them and they were inside, she must have gone out in the night. Duh! The only way something could reach her is if she was leaning on the outside of the stinking fence. She was totally protected on 3 sides and the top.

All she had to do is move over about 4 inches.

Oh I am so sorry....

Oh Annie! I am so sorry!! I have seen your set up...It looks like Fort Knox. Ginny

Well, I still didn't lose nearly as much as some in the storms we've had. A friend lost over 200 birds because his barn flooded. Horrible tragedy. He may have a female pheasant for me left. I'll give him some babies in the spring.

**Ladylibra - On a happier note, the Cornish eggs I won at our Poultry Picnic which I was told may have questionable fertility are developing. Started the incubator on the Saturday evening before Irene with 5 eggs, power went out for about 24 hours, candled last night and 4 are clearly developing. Woot! Hatch date of around 9/18.

Awesome!! The eggs I bought at the picnic aren't doing too well - I think I have 6/12 developing. But that's OK since I really only needed a few chicks for my broody. A dozen would have been too many!

Hello all! After 9 days of no electric and cleaning up the basement from the flood I am finally back and online! Long ordeal but I am grateful it wasnt worse as there were other people not far from me who suffered greater, including loss of life. My cheeps made out very well in their coops and were just mad that they were locked up for a day or two. Of course we are getting more rain(which we dont need) and the big girls are locked up again today as their run is very wet. Talk about mad hens! I read through some of your posts and was sad to see that some did not fair as well with their birds. On to recovery I guess. I have decided that I would rather have a noreaster with 6 feet of snow than a hurricane because at least i can shovel the snow!

Cydney83--where are you located as I am in ulster co as well. I am at the northern end of the county.

Anyone have any ideas as to what to do with a semi-mean roo? He was handraised as an only chick for the first 2 months of his life (first mistake, I was a rookie) and really isnt much of a protector or nice to the girls sometimes. He is my first silkie so I am reluctant to give him up as I am attached. My other silkie roo is a month younger but larger. He is a gentleman to the girls, respectful of me and a good protector. I will not be breeding my older roo as i dont wants those traits passed on. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Good luck...I had pheasant eggs in last year and at my son grad party someone turned the temp up and all the chicken eggs died but the pheasant eggs hatched...
